AgapeCARE, a Christian non-profit & charity organization dedicated to serving the poor, needy and underprivileged community of Melaka since 2007, organized “Blessed Melaka Carnival 2024″ in Melaka Mall on Saturday, 9th November 2024.
The carnival aimed to achieve the following objectives:
1. To bless the poor, needy and underserved families or individuals, from young to elderly, (known or recommended to AgapeCARE) to experience and enjoy a carnival.
2. To demonstrate society’s consideration, care and goodwill to the above group of people by providing carnival coupons and cash vouchers to be redeemed at AgapeCARE’s ‘HOPe Pre-loved Shop’, after the carnival.
3. To provide an avenue for companies, organizations, institutions and vendors to engage and interact with the society of Melaka in an atmosphere of joy, goodwill and celebration, with the inclusion of games, music and performances.
4. To provide goods & services at acceptable market rates, through the purchase of Carnival coupons.
The organising committee consisted of members of different churches. Rev Tom Cherian (Organising Chairman) from Christ Church Melaka, together with Josephine Au (Executive Chairman) and Caroline Chua (Deputy Executive Chairman) from AgapeCARE society appealed to churches in Melaka to support the Carnival in the spirit of Christian community service.
Local churches responded favourably by sponsoring a stall, donating items for sale, helping to sell coupons, volunteering at carnival stalls and making cash donations. Non-Christian organisations took part in this charity event by offering hair-cut service and donating items.
The 4-hour carnival officially began with an opening ceremony graced by YB Khoo Poay Tiong, Member of Parliament for Kota Melaka.
Cultural dances, music and other performances on the indoor stage showcased local talents and provided entertainment throughout the carnival until 2pm.
Since the event was held in the premises of a commercial mall, non-Christians shoppers were drawn to purchase items at the Carnival stalls too.
All the proceeds of this event will help to fund various programmes under AgapeCARE, such as Solid Rock Learning Centre which mainly provides basic education and after school care for underprivileged children, and OPal which targets single parents.
