The Perky Yellow Choir- RunNat

Standing in front of the H&M store of Lot 10 Kuala Lumpur, a 20-person choir clad in bright yellow shirts drew a curious crowd. Many stopped in their steps to bask in the glorious singing; a few were even seen recording the perky ensemble with their cell phones.

Run for the Nation (RunNat) surprised patrons on the morning of December 7, with their Christmas repertoire for close to two hours on the street and on-stage in Lot 10, bolstered by the powerful voices of Tenors for Christ—Victor Chua, Tom Tan, and Joshua Lee.

The three-month preparation was successful, with the RunNat organizing committee—Victor Chua (chairman and founder of RunNat), KTAR students Jansen Yeoh and Jia Ying Lee, Joshua Lee Awang (chairman and founder of StART Society), Daniel Lee (Ambassador for RunNat), Daniel Tong, and Michelle Chang.

“Having this choir is a reminder to myself that our hope is anchored in the Lord. We are here to bring hope—which Christ has given to us—back to the people,” said 20-year-old Jansen Yeoh, Head Organizing Committee for RunNat. Funds collected from the patrons during the choir will be donated to a few of the 12 beneficiaries of RunNat.

Joshua Lee from Tenors for Christ added, “This is the best and worst time of the season because one feels most the numbing feeling of loneliness. We want to bring grace and joy!”

Not only the choir brought joy to the patrons, the choir members exuded an apparent joy from their faces as well. “This is my first time joining a Christian NGO for caroling and I really like the fellowship with all these new friends. We went to sing on the street as well (though) it was an overwhelming experience,” beamed Junie Lim.

The songs sang were White Christmas, Merry Christmas Darling, The Christmas Song, Joy to the World, Away in a Manger, Jingle Bells, I’ll be Home for Christmas, Oh Holy Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, Angels We Have Heard on High, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, Deck the Halls, Feliz Navidad, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

The crowd drew a satisfactory look as they listened to the choir. Ms Goh, one of the audiences was particularly touched when Tom Tan from Tenors for Christ sang ‘Holy Night.’ “There was this sense of majesty, of Christ coming when he (Tom) sang at the end. That was the highlight for me,” she said.

Although holding the RunNat choir had its challenges in the beginning, Jansen fixed his eyes upon Christ. He would like to encourage the young people to boldly give to God, starting from small steps, “You don’t need to be someone great to have a big fund-raising event… but start from little things like asking the cleaner, ‘How you are doing?’ and your friends, ‘How is your day?’”

Indeed, it is the sprinkle of joy and hope that matters to the people around us! And on that day, the perky yellow choir of RunNat has brought people hope and joy.
