St. Faith’s Youth and Bethany Ministries organized a seminar on “Goal Setting for an Abundant Life” at St. Faith’s Church, Parish Centre, on Saturday, here in Kuching, Sarawak.

Speaker Dr. Wong Hong Meng touched on how to utilize one’s potential to have an abundant life in the Lord. “For Christians, our goals must be in line with the will of God,” he stated.

“The Lord Almighty has sworn, ‘Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand’,” Isaiah 14:24. The topic, Goal Setting for an Abundant Life – turning good intentions into positive actions, embraced Bible-based roles of praying and planning in leadership. The seminar looked at how to live an abundant life, the six areas of life, and more.

Dr. Wong started with asking the participants to list out their master dream list. This list include places to visit, things to do, things to have, personality or character traits to develop, goals to achieve including qualifications and titles. Some of the examples on the dream list are to own a house or be a rock star. This self-assessment exercise was to encourage participants to dream big.

The six areas of life mentioned were financial and career, family and home, spiritual and ethical, mental and educational, physical and health, and social and cultural. Participants were asked to rate themselves from zero to ten on questions for the six areas like, “Do you live within your means?” and “Do you participate regularly in social and cultural activities?” These areas needed to be balanced, which made up a healthy “wheel of life”, with God as the center of focus.

Dr. Wong also expressed his concerns about how young people manage their finances. “They are never taught in school or university how to manage their own money, only about other people’s money,” he said. He quoted Selwyn Hughes, “Success is to know the will of God and doing it”.

“It’s (the seminar) is good,” said Co-organizer Pastor Fong Che Chung, from Bethany Ministries. “It’s practical and not too spiritual. Even non-Christians can come here,” he said. “Without goals, we could go into the wrong path,” he agreed.

“The seminar is useful. It gives us hope. Dr. Wong gave great examples of people’s success stories, which shows we are not alone when it comes to financial or other issues,” said one of the participants.

Participants also got to take part in practical exercises during the talk. The three-hour talk was attended by members from St. Faith’s Church and Bethany Ministries, as well as students. The seminar is presented by the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship.

Dr. Wong and his wife, Irene, worship at Damansara Utama Methodist Church, Petaling Jaya. He is currently a member of the Governing Council for the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship and serves on the NECF Leadership Commission.

Dr. Wong Hong Meng is a certified course director for a Christian authored personal leadership program. He facilitates the “Financial Freedom” seminar from the Institute in Basic Life Principles as well as “Business by the book” seminar from Crown Financial Ministries. The event was held at the Parish Centre, St. Faith’s Church, Kuching, Sarawak.
