Do not hide the gift God has placed in you – Ivory Lim

On 11 January 2015, Ivory Lim shared in the Art Sowers Talk in DUMC, before an audience of more than 30 people from Art College and Industry about how she glorified the Lord through her art.

Having graduated from The One Academy, she shared about how she depended on God in a class project that she struggled in during her college days. Her lecturer, Lew Tau Fei would often encouraged her to pray and to seek the Word of God for her final project. The project was for an NGO, Save One Sight Mission. Its goal was to create awareness to prevent blindness.

So, she prayed and God gave her a verse, ‘Your eyes are the lamp to your body.’ (Luke 11:34)

“And every single week, God showed me something new. He showed me visions and specific logos through the whole period of time. I depended on the Lord, I received, and I executed,” said Ivory.

And during the presentation, God had a sense of humor to place her as the last person to present.

She continued, “I think most of my classmates were non believers and my slides had many Bible verses. In front of my classmates, I shared how I encountered God in that process. It was really eye opening.”

“I had never encountered God in such a way. If I could glorify God with my talent then, I know this is a talent that God has given me,” said Ivory.

Under YWAM in partnership with Tamar Village Ministry, she went with a few friends for an outreach at Geylang, Singapore – a red light district.

“I was scared because there were all sorts of things happening at night. So, we thought, maybe we should seek God and see what God wants us to do. So, we prayed and started drawing.

“Specifically, there was one lady. I asked God, ‘God, what is your heart for that girl?’ Everyone would pass by her and judge her. So, I drew a flower, though it wasn’t really pretty, but I just wanted to tell her that she is as beautiful as a flower and I said, ‘God Bless’ and pass it to her,” said Ivory

All the pimps were wondering what Ivory and her friends were doing. Ivory saw that the lady was in tears and this reminded her of how Jesus was shunned during crucifixion. All these women did not want to be in that position. Although Ivory did not know if that drawing meant anything to this lady, she believed that the seed had been sown.

After Ivory graduated from The One Academy, she worked in an advertising agency. But because Ivory has learned to depend on the Lord, she quit to pursue her dream that the Lord has placed in her – using art and design to reach out to people and glorify Him.

“Through those days, I learned how to depend on God and how to put God first because I realized that we have to be rooted in Him in everything we do. What does it matter if you gain everything in this world but lose your soul?

“God has directed my steps to missions. I let go of everything I thought is important. I gave them back to God and let Him work in my life. No award or fame mean anything. Let His name be glorified,” said Ivory.

She will be going to an Arts Discipleship Training School under YWAM Amsterdam. And from a struggling art student among the pack, she encouraged all Christian artists to show the light within.

“I want to encourage you if you think you are not good enough. Throughout the whole process, it’s not about us. It’s about God. Don’t hide. Some of the dreams that God put in your heart are too beautiful to hide.  Art is a wonderful gift, if steward well, it will impact a nation, even if it’s just one person. Don’t hide,” said Ivory.

Her lecturer, Lew Tau Fei shared how he prayed for God to lead him to a student to disciple in his class one day. And the Lord showed her Ivory.

“Art can captivate a person’s heart not because of how beautiful the person is or art is, but how perfect God’s message is in the art. ‘Out of dust, we are fearfully and wonderfully made by God.’ We cannot make any art to be more beautiful than what God has already created. All these imperfect arts became perfect because of God’s work in our art,” said Tau Fei, recalling how God transformed Ivory’s heart and brought her out to shine for the world.

Do not hide the gifts God has given you. They are meant to be shown to the world, not to glorify ourselves, but to glorify God’s mighty name.
