Praying for Cities

“This is the season of Jubilee. God is doing a lot of miracles and wonders this season. So, get ready!” said Pr Julius Suubi on the second day of Prayer School at Blessed Church, Kuching.

1 Corinthians 15:32, “If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus with no more than human hopes, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

1 Corinthians 16:9, “because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.”

“Tonight we’re looking at the concept of praying for cities,” he said. According to Acts 17, God is the one who determines the time and season for people within a boundary; those who dwell and seek His face.

“You are not in Kuching by mistake. God brought you here by divine purpose,” continued Pr Suubi.

“God has a great plan for you in the city where you live in. God has a great plan for every city on planet earth,” he said. Scripture tells us that God is very interested in cities. “If you’re going to impact a nation, you must impact with a city,” he added.

Sodom and Gomorrah were cities destroyed by sin. When God promised the children of Israel the Promised Land, one of the things He gave them are cities. Prophet Jonah was sent to the city of Nineveh. Jesus preached in cities. Jerusalem was also a city. So, God has a plan for cities.

Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, said that many beasts roam in Ephesus. ‘Beasts’ are devils and powers of darkness. The doors were opened but there were many adversaries. “Looking at these scriptures, we realized that God always open doors in cities,” he said.

“In the city of Kuching, there are many doors for ministries. The Lord is opening up the church in this city,” he said. With 40 percent out of 600 000 people in Kuching who are Christians, how many of them are on fire?

“There are great opportunities. There are great doors in the city for us to reach out to the people who don’t know about the gospel,” said Pr Suubi, reflecting that there are 360 000 people out there waiting for the gospel to be taken to them. There are great business opportunities, job and resources in this city. “Through prayer and intercession, we are able to unlock the door. There are many people who are in the gates of deception and we need to crush those gates in the name of Jesus!” he said.

Paul said that the doors are opened but there are many adversaries. “Adversaries here are demonic oppositions that are trying to hinder the advancement of the Kingdom of God,” he said. “This is why I say the church of Christ must become a church on fire for God!”

Matthew 11:12, “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence and violent people have been raiding it.”

Do you have the spirit of fire inside your life? Are you a fighter against darkness or are you merely ‘a lady strutting on high heels’ in Kuching? “We are not in a fashion show! We are in a war! We are in a battle against the powers of darkness, against the devil. We must rise up as a church to fight against the forces of darkness,” he said.

“That’s why I say religious prayer is not going to work in the city,” he said adding the adversary needs confrontational prayer to overcome. “We need personal and corporate intercession for us to overcome the powers of darkness that is controlling the city.”

“When the prince that is controlling the city of Kuching is overthrown, that cannot happen with one church praying. It needs a corporate anointing,” he said. “Corporate prayer has a lot of power against forces of darkness. That is why the devil is always fighting against the unity among churches in the city.”

Pr Suubi talked about the wildebeests in Kenya that travel in a herd to Tanzania to escape the cold season. To get to Tanzania, the wildebeests had to cross a river filled with crocodiles. “Those crocodiles are always waiting to have their Christmas party in August, they are waiting for their Chinese New Year (feast),” joked Pr Suubi. While most animals fall as preys to the crocodiles, the wildebeests wait for the whole herd to arrive before they stampede over the river as a herd. Their powerful legs cause such a commotion that the crocodiles have to flee for their lives!

“That is the same thing when we come together in corporate intercession. When the church comes together, the devil will not have us but we will fight the power of darkness in Kuching, in the name of Jesus!”

“We need corporate intercession and I pray in this season of Jubilee, may the Lord unite the church in the city of Kuching. Let there be unity! We bind the spirit of disunity in the name of Jesus,” he said, asking the congregation to tell their neighbors, “I will love you by force.”

The Prayer School with Pr Julius Suubi was organized by the Full Gospel Businessmen and Kuching Ministers Fellowship. The five-day prayer school, leading to Malaysia Day, was held at Blessed Church, Kuching.
