Reverend Ewen Chow, Youth Pastor of Bread of Life Christian Church in Taipei, recently shared on how God works in our life in a conference at Johor, as he recalled his experience of how he was called to serve our Lord through bible verses in 1998 as a full-timer.
Reverend Ewen shared that he actually did not like youth before he started to respond to God’s calling. “You know what? I don’t like youth initially. I feel that young people are very noisy. I don’t even have any vision for them,” said Reverend Ewen.
However, God opened his eyes up one day, which transformed his whole life. “God showed me a vision. He opened up my eyes to see how clueless and hopeless are the young people in this generation. Soon, I saw that this is not only something that is happening in our society, but also in our church. And I feel sad about this,” said Reverend Ewen.
“As we see in Matthew 16:18, ‘And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. ’ Peter was called by Jesus to not only build God’s church, but to glorify His church! (Eph 3:21)
“…to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:21)
God is working in our life!
All of us know that God is working in our life. However, although we understand this truth, we often tend to avoid this from happening in our life albeit unintentionally. “When God works in our life, we feel uncomfortable (in our heart), we feel offended when our leaders try to speak the truth in love to us. Sometimes, we can’t even do things that bring us pleasure, which is not right in God’s eyes,” Reverend Ewen said. He shared that we need to have a few things which could keep us moving in this process.
First, we need to have a steadfast vision that comes from God. “When is your last time receiving a vision from God?” Reverend Ewen said. He continued to share that obedience is the key to unlock the fulfilling the vision of God. “The degree of our obedience in God’s love determine the speed of the fulfillment of our vision.”
Secondly, we need to have a passion that never goes out! “Our vision needs fuel, and this fuel will be our passion. So where does this passion comes from? It comes from our prayer. Just like Nehemiah, who prayed diligently before God with the vision that he received from God, eventually that gives him great passion that never runs out regardless of his environment (Nehemiah 1:3-4),” said Reverend Ewen.
They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.” When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. (Nehemiah 1:3-4)
Reverend Ewen pointed out that when one is filled with great passion from God, we could easily tell the difference of this person. This person will live accordingly to what God wants him to. He is also willing to give up everything just to fulfill God’s vision. When this person is filled by God’s passion, he will choose to please God rather than cater to everyone.
Lastly, all of us need to know and understand that everything is by His grace. “You and me, every one of us need God’s grace to sustain us. And this grace is a gift from God to us, a supernatural power that would help us in fulfilling vision in our life,” said Reverend Ewen.
