Started by HGC, Ampang, two months ago, HGCKL’s vision is ‘to light up the city for Jesus Christ.’
On 28th of July, sis Helen How shared a timely message on how we can hear the voice of God.
When Jesus took Peter, James and John to the high mountain, God spoke out of the clouds and said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him (Matthew 17:1-5)!”
Helen shared how she visited a place in Israel, believed to be Jesus’ tomb. A sign wrote, ‘He is not here, He is risen.’ Because Jesus has risened, He is alive! So, we can hear Him and have a relationship with Him.
“Many Christian friends asked me, ‘How do you hear the voice of God?’ Actually, all of us can hear the voice of God. God is speaking to us all the time (Proverbs 8:1-4). It is up to us to tune into Him,” shared Helen.
She shared a story of how a younger sister got tired of inheriting her elder sister’s second-hand clothing. When she grew older, she wanted new clothes to be given directly to her, without going through her elder sister.
Likewise, we may have grown accustomed to our preachers spoon-feeding us with words of revelation from God. But there will come a time when we want first-hand and direct revelation from God, Himself.
“We want specific words from God such as what job to take, where to stay, and God’s plan and destiny for our lives.”
Helen shared how she admired authors who wrote books of great revelation. Yet, the truth is that all of us have the same Holy Spirit. There is no ‘senior’ or ‘junior’ Holy Spirit.
All of us can hear the voice of God. ‘My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me’ (John 10:27). When we accept Christ as our Lord and Saviour, He becomes our Shepherd and we become His sheep. This marks the beginning of a relationship with Christ. When we pray, we get to attune to God’s voice.
“Putting our trust in Jesus is therefore not just attending church or joining ministries. But it comes from a having a relationship with Jesus.”
During Jesus’ time, a group of shepherds would bring their respective sheep into a common sheepfold, whereby only one of them would stay overnight to guard the sheep.
Because there is only one entrance into the sheepfold, the shepherd would sleep across the entrance to guard the sheep. The shepherd literally became the ‘door’ to reach the sheep. That is why Jesus said, “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture” (John 10:9).
The next morning, the shepherds would return to claim their sheep. One by one, every shepherd would call upon their sheep and they would follow him (John 10:1-5).
The Spirit of God speaks to us (Revelation 2:29); we hear Him through our spiritual ears. This is because when we accept Christ, the Holy Spirit dwells in us (1 Corinthians 3:16, Ephesians 1:13). But before we come to Christ, our spirit is dead without Him (Colossians 2:13).
To hear from God, we must first expect to hear from Him. A. W. Tozer once said, “A person who does not believe that God speaks will discount it when He does speak, every time.”
“Those who don’t expect God to speak will discount the times when He speaks, (attributing it) to coincidence, luck or even ‘my idea.’”
For example, Helen shared how God prompted her to stay in her company. Even though another company offered her a doubling salary, she obeyed the Word of God to stay (Ecclesiastes 10:4). As a result, she was saved from bankruptcy of the new company.
Hallelujah! God promises us in His Word, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3).
“The Word of God is in our heart (Deut 30:14). As we meditate on the Word, the Holy Spirit will be able to direct us and by His Word. We know that the Holy Spirit is God (Matthew 28:19).”
When the Holy Spirit takes residence in us, all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17), as He does a sanctification process in us (1 Peter 1:2). It is the Holy Spirit that enables us to work and act according to God’s good pleasure (Philippians 2:13).
One of the best ways to know God and discern His voice is through His Word. We need to spend a lot of time reading, meditating and studying God’s Word to know His character and the way He speaks. God will not contradict His words when He speaks.
The sheep are able to discern the voice of the shepherd because they spend a lot of time with him. They trust that the shepherd will do good to them and they obey him wherever he leads. Even though they are at a green pasture with water, they trusted that the shepherd always knew better when he decided to move them to another pasture.
“God has written in His book the days fashioned for our lives (Ps 139:16). He knows us and has His plan for our lives.
“As we spend time with God, we know Him as a good Father who gives good gifts to us. May we use the giftings, talents, energy, resources He has given to us, hear His specific direct revelation leading for our lives and walk in the way ordained for us to fulfill our destiny for His glory.”
Jesus said, “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). May we hear Jesus and follow Him always. He is our True, Good and Great Shepherd.
