The Malaysian Gospel Music (MGM) Festival 2026 successfully took place on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, at GENSPACE, Citta Mall in Ara Damansara, Selangor. This landmark event gathered local artists, worship leaders, and Christian musicians from various church denominations across Malaysia to elevate local songwriting and worship, continuing MGM’s long-standing mission of building up the body of Christ through skill, fellowship, and worship and with a focused vision on equipping worship leaders and musicians while celebrating the unity of the gospel community.

Malaysian Gospel Music (MGM)
Founded in 2011 by Rev. Dr. Nicholas Wu and Rev. Ng Wah Lok, MGM was created as a pioneering platform to promote Malaysian gospel music and raise its musical standards for national recognition and appreciation. The inaugural concert at Wisma Eagles, USJ, drew over 1,500 attendees, a testament to the strong desire for a national identity in gospel music. Since then, MGM has hosted concerts across major cities such as Petaling Jaya, Ipoh, Penang, Kuching, and Johor Baru and produced three worship albums — ADORE, KASIH, and UNITED — featuring original songs by Malaysian artists. As Rev. Ng Wah Lok reflects, “Our ultimate objective was that our locally composed gospel songs would be heard and sung in the churches across our nation and beyond.”

Morning Masterclasses: Equipping the Local Church
The festival commenced at 10:00 AM with hands-on workshops priced affordably at RM30, where 174 registered participants – worship pastors, musicians, media personnel, and vocalists – eagerly refined their craft. Sessions included:
- Vocal Techniques by Patrick Leong (English) and Carmen Wong (Mandarin), strengthening pitch, control, and clarity to empower worship leaders.

- Band Dynamics by Zeo Music Band, focusing on transitioning from individual playing to tight musical unity.

- Media Production in Church by Leon Lim, enhancing the quality and impact of contemporary livestreams.

- Worship Leading by Timothy Lim and Keith Piong, emphasizing worship flow, spiritual sensitivity, and stage leadership.

- Music Arrangement and Production by Nelson and Hong from 724 Band, covering how to build musical climaxes, create different atmospheres, and balance when to play or hold back in worship settings.

These sessions provided “practical tools and insights from leaders who have ‘walked the journey,’” helping participants grow in both skill and confidence, embodying MGM’s conviction that excellence in ministry “comes through deliberate training and intentional refinement.” Workshop attendees also appreciated the harmonious blend of technical skill-building with spiritual growth. The collaborative atmosphere fostered meaningful conversations that transcended denominational lines, perfectly aligning with MGM’s vision of uniting believers through worship and music.
Afternoon Concert: A Multilingual Tapestry of Praise
At 2:00 PM, the festival opened its doors for a free public concert that filled GENSPACE to capacity. The concert showcased an extensive lineup of established and emerging local gospel artists representing Malaysia’s diverse church community and languages, including English, Bahasa Malaysia, and Chinese.

Performers featured veterans like Patrick Leong, Ken Leong and friends on saxophone, Harvester, the 724 Band, Carmen Wong and Zeo Music representing the Mandarin segment, alongside church-based bands Mega CMC, World Harvest Church, and Generations Worship. Young emerging Bahasa Malaysia artist Melinda Dadew, known through reality TV and TikTok, also performed. With GENSPACE’s modern stage, large LED displays, and high-quality sound system, the concert was a vibrant celebration of homegrown worship music.

The songs shared ranged from original compositions highlighting God’s comforting, everlasting love to heartfelt renditions that underscored the community’s unique identity and calling. The concert was hosted by Rev Ng Wah Lok and Amelia Tan.

MGM President Rev. Dr. Nicholas Wu delivered the President’s address, recalling MGM’s founding vision alongside Ng Wah Lok in 2011 to “promote the use of Malaysian Gospel songs in our own churches.” Over the years, a dedicated committee, including Lucy Loo, Patrick Leong, Esther Mui, Timothy Lim, Shamini, Alvin Tan, Kelvin Lim, and Keith Piong, has tirelessly worked to uphold this vision.

MGM 2026 Lifetime Achievement Awards
An emotional highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the MGM Lifetime Achievement Awards, recognizing individuals whose significant contributions have advanced Malaysian gospel music over two decades. The honorees were:
Lucy Loo — Songwriter and producer from Georgetown Baptist Church, Penang, founder of SAND (Saved for A New Destiny) in 2002, which has released seven gospel albums aimed at nurturing a new generation gifted in music and creative arts in Malaysia.

Rev Ng Wah Lok — Prolific songwriter, pastor, and MGM co-founder, with over 100 songs composed and three major albums released. His signature song, “Every Time I Pray,” originally composed in 1981, has been translated into ten languages and is widely sung worldwide. His song “Harvest of the Fields” won the 2004 Australian Gospel Music Award for Best Hymn.

Rev. Dr. Nicholas Wu — Founder and President of MGM, recognized for his leadership in uniting and equipping Christian musicians and songwriters nationwide. Notably, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at Asia’s Gospel and Christian Music Awards (AGCMA) in 2025 for his lasting impact.

Passing the Baton
After 15 years of faithful service, Nicholas Wu and Ng Wah Lok announced their retirement from MGM leadership to allow a younger generation to lead. On 17 June 2026, the presidency was officially handed to Ps Timothy Lim, who will select a new committee. The event included a commissioning prayer for Timothy as he assumed responsibility to propel MGM forward. As Rev. Ng Wah Lok expressed, “The effectiveness to reach any generation rests on the leadership of the day. The time has come for us to move aside and cheer the new leaders on.”

A Lasting Legacy for Local Worship
The festival concluded with a stirring rendition of “Every Time I Pray,” sung in both Mandarin and English, symbolizing the enduring legacy of MGM’s founders and the vibrant future of Malaysian gospel music. More than a musical showcase, MGM Festival 2026 was a vital catalyst for unity, mentorship, and creative expression within the local church music community. Organizers expressed hope that the original songs heard and nurtured at the festival will steadily find their way into Sunday worship across Malaysia, truly becoming the authentic “Sound of the Nation.”
