Heavenly Devotion: Psalm 111 – A Covenant Keeping God to be Adored and Praised Endlessly

Psalm 111 – A Covenant Keeping God to be Adored and Praised Endlessly

(by Pr Philips Koh)

The psalmist begins [Psalm 111] by praising and thanking God publicly with his whole heart in verse 1. He proceeds to explore the great works of God in verse 2. Such works not only demonstrate God’s majestic power but they also reveal God acting righteously rather than capriciously (verse 3). Thus do you and I rejoice in a great and good God?

Next, the Psalmist specifies how good God is by recalling God’s miraculous provision of manna in a barren wilderness for the ancient Israelites in verse 5. Then God even gave them a land flowing with milk and honey (verse 6). More tellingly God redeemed them from the terrible bondage of slavery in Egypt (verse 9).

How does this Thanksgiving Psalm apply to us? We too should be enthralled by such a powerful God who created something out of nothing by uttering words to effect the material creation of Genesis chapter 1. Then like our psalmist, we should count our blessings and name them one by one. For instance, we have enjoyed far greater blessings in the form of eternal life. Does this truth engender heartfelt gratitude and ceaseless praise from us?

Twice the psalmist rests his faith in a covenant-keeping God (verses 5 and 9). Likewise how deeply encouraged are you and I that God will always honor the terms of the New Covenant established through Jesus? Finally a spiritual basis for ‘glorifying God and enjoying Him forever’ starts with the  fear of the Lord (verse 10). So how much reverential oil do we have for this righteous and holy God?

Let’s Read Psalm 111

1 Praise the LORD.
I will extol the LORD with all my heart
in the council of the upright and in the assembly.
2 Great are the works of the LORD;
they are pondered by all who delight in them.
3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered;
the LORD is gracious and compassionate.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he remembers his covenant forever.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
giving them the lands of other nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy.
8 They are established for ever and ever,
enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He provided redemption for his people;
he ordained his covenant forever—
holy and awesome is his name.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
all who follow his precepts have good understanding.
To him belongs eternal praise.

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, thank you for being a covenant-keeping God. It brings so much comfort to each one of us to know that you will ‘never leave us nor forsake us’. So we rest our faith in this stupendous truth. In Jesus’s Name. Amen.
