Psalm 91 – The Lord is our Refuge and our Fortress
(by Vincent Jiam)
The psalmist declares that those who enter into the presence of the Lord would find rest and one can be sure to take refuge in Him. The Lord is a reliable fortress and a secure rampart of defense. A shield that we can believe in and depend on. His Word is faithful and true. The evil plot devised against us will not work. Instead, the LORD shows that the wicked may fall in a thousand or even ten thousand by pestilence and plague. The LORD would only have us watch as our deliverance unfolds.
If we too, proclaim that the Lord is our refuge and also abide in His presence, we know that He shepherds us forward and would not let evil overtake us. He shall also guard and send us help as we walk to the standards of our high calling, our inheritance in being a people of God. We trample the prowling lion and the deceiving serpent by setting captives free as we proclaim the testimony of Jesus. We keep His Word.
When we call upon the Name of the Lord, whom we love dearly, He rescues and protect us. He will answer us (Micah 7:7) He will be with us in trouble, He delivers us and restore our sonship royal honor. Our God will welcome us into eternal life when we see Jesus, our salvation.
Let’s Read Psalm 91
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
Let’s Pray
Heavenly Father, I look to You in Your holy abode, for in Your high dwelling, no accuser may enter. The blood of Your Son, Jesus makes this distinction. Lord Jesus carry me through as I learn to walk humbly before You according to Your Word. Don’t let the fowler steal your Word from my heart, for Your words of life are my delight and my treasure. They comfort me and preserve my life. May Your Spirit aid me to wield Your sword to victory when I need to die to the flesh and to live for You.
Remember to forgive Thy servant Lord and grant Your grace in my need. Thank you for Your love and faithfulness. In Jesus’ Name I humbly pray. Amen.
