Philemon Suren, an upbeat 22-year-old college boy, recalled his parents as being “very grounded in Word.” Every weekend, they would teach and ask him and his siblings to memorize Bible verses.

“Among my siblings, I memorized the fastest because after finishing memorizing, I can go out to play,” quipped Philemon. Philemon’s family reminded me of Joshua 21:15 which says:

v 15: But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.

“We live in faith as a family and all of us have to trust God all the way,” said Philemon remembering a challenging time in his family.

Psalm 20:7

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

When he was growing up, he explored and hung out with a bunch of “naughty” friends in Penang. But at 18 years old, he met God when he had to trust in Him in choosing to go to the university over working. Never seeing himself as a valedictorian or inclined towards studying, he described his report card as having “everything red except English.” It is not until Form Three, his academics suddenly improved. Nevertheless, he was still more interested in working.

“I choose to get into UM (University Malaya) instead of working because I trusted God,” said Philemon. “God has already provided for me to study in the university, so I just go for it. All we need to do is to claim His provision and stay strong,”

 Joshua 1:9

Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed: for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Most importantly, he thinks that all he needs to do is to love Jesus Christ. Recognizing humans as “failing machines”, he knew that he could always trust and depend on God no matter how wrecked life can be.

Isaiah 12:2

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

At different phase our lives, we make important decisions that would shape our future. But rests assure that God has your back, and you can trust Him in all you do.

Psalm 143:8

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.
