Easter – A New Covenant

When I was living in Australia, I knew Easter was round the corner when all the chocolate Easter bunnies and chocolate Easter eggs started to fill the aisle of the supermarkets. I would be really happy and go crazy buying Easter eggs coz they were cute and good to eat! Churches seem to be more crowded on Easter Sunday. We know that it has to do with Jesus dying on the cross and how he rose again three days later. We celebrate his resurrection, but what really does this all mean for us, as people who believe in Jesus Christ?

In John chapter 12, a large crowd welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem, carrying palm branches and hailing Him as the King of Israel. They welcomed the Messiah as they gathered to celebrate the Passover and this filled the Pharisees with anger and disgust. They certainly did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah.

In John 12:23-26, Jesus spoke of the fruitful grain of wheat, saying “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.”

While many probably did not understand what Jesus meant when he said this, Jesus knew that He had to die and rise up to produce life for those who believed in Him. He knew that His death and resurrection would be a catalyst that propelled many to follow Him.

Jesus knew that He was going to be killed and He also knew how He was going to be killed. He knew the time was approaching and he told his disciples how he’d like his death on the cross to be remembered in Luke 22:14-20. ‘When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table. Jesus said. “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.” Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. Then he said. “Take this and share it among yourselves. For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come.” He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.” After supper he took another cup of wine and said. “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people – an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.’

From this short passage, we know that Jesus wants us to remember his great sacrifice by taking the communion. He made this request knowing that He would soon be betrayed by Judas, and that He would soon be publicly humiliated, beaten and finally hung on the cross to die. He knew that He had to give His body and pour out His blood as a sacrifice for us. The heart of Easter lies in the words ‘the new covenant between God and His people”

Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, we have the victory over death. When accept Christ as our Savior, we now have eternal life. God promises forgiveness and grace, all we have to do is receive it. His death and resurrection has given us victory over the eternal separation from God.

This Easter, let us remember what His death really means, and if you have not received Christ as your Savior, why not let Him into your hearts? All you have to do is ‘confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9). Let’s thank Jesus for what He did and for giving us life!
