Revisiting Wonders

In 1990, a bunch of school girls and two teachers went on a youth camping trip that brought a revival to the people and churches in Kuching.  As one of the most told open vision sightings in Kuching, the Siar Beach signs and wonders occurrence continues to impact the lives of many.

“It is still clear in my mind. I cannot forget these kinds of experiences,” recalls Florence Tan, one of the 37 girls who went on the wondrous Anglican Youth Society camp about 20 years ago. As a fresh faced 14-year old, she remembers the change of venue when their two teachers told the girls that they would be going to Siar Beach instead of Pandan Beach as planned.

“With the sudden change, being Form 2, we just followed our teachers,” says Florence. The isolated wooden bungalow just 2KM from their original destination made do for the three day two nights camp. The change in venue and the one-day change of date were unexpected; however, it was part of God’s glorious plan for the girls. The camp was postponed one day due to school activities. “It just looked like a longhouse, with the long balcony,” she adds. Florence remembers cleaning the house with the girls and looking at the muddy sea.

During the night prayer session, one of the teachers, sis Susie Lu, asked the girls to fast and wait upon the Lord. God spoke to her and told her that He would show them signs and wonders at 2am. The girls were told to repent and they continued to worship and pray in tongues. “We were crying and repenting whole heartedly,” says Florence.

Before 2 am, the girls had gathered at the balcony. “We were not tired, we were with friends and very excited. We were waiting for something to happen, then someone said, ‘what’s that?” she tells. The dark morning sky lit brightly with clouds slowly forming images and words.

“I remember well the words, ‘joy, love, peace’, obviously spelled in clouds in the sky,” Florence tells what happened that morning. There were words, I LOVE MY CHILDREN and JESUS LOVES (heart shape) U in the sky. There were visions of a dove, a sword with the word Jesus on the handle, a shield, a crown, footprints, an open book with a quill pen and hearts in the sky. The clouds would mix and change to another image. The change was fast, one image or word after another.

Though there was many more formation in the sky. Florence remembers well “an image of a rider on a horse. He was wearing a crown.”  There was also a man wearing a crown and a long robe standing with the world under His feet. They also saw a man sitting on a throne talking to another person on His right. They were wearing crowns.

Lastly, the words “GO PREACH” was written in the sky and a “bearded man with tears flowing down his face.” She recalls in awe to the signs and wonders presented to them that night. All the girls saw the visions which lasted one and a half hour.

The next day, the girls had another open vision during water baptism later in the afternoon. At the spot where 18 girls were to be baptized, the sky ‘opens’ in the middle of a cloud.

Florence describes an open book, with a quill pen over it in the cloud formation. “The moment a girl goes into the water, her name is formed by the clouds on top of the book,” she joyfully describes. “I was so excited. The name changes every time a girl gets in!” she continues excitedly, recalling the miracle of having seen each girl’s name written in the sky one by one.

“We were there to witness everything,” says Florence. Some of the girls are still in contact today and they often mark the date August 5 every year since then.

The signs and wonders at Siar Beach brought revival to the girls’ Christian club at St. Mary’s Secondary School, Kuching. Attendance to the club increased to more than double the 80 plus members. Some of the girls also gave testimony at their respective churches.

“I talk to my children about the open vision. My older children understand and believe in God,” she says. Florence, her husband Billy, and children live in Kuching.  The family attends the Blessed Sacrament Church.
