The Word This Week – The Law is Righteous and Good

Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. (Rom. 7:12)

THE LAW IS RIGHTEOUS AND GOOD

The law of Moses failed to achieve its end, not because of anything wrong with the law itself, but because of the weakness and sinful fallen nature of man. Paul said,

"For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members." (Rom. 7:22-23)

What he is saying here, is that the law itself is righteous and good. And the man who seeks to live by the law may be perfectly sincere in upholding the standards and values religiously.  Despite all this, the power of sin within him and the weakness of his own fleshy nature defeats him from living up to those standards.

JESUS CANCELLED THE REQUIREMENT OF THE LAW

When Jesus came into this world, He put an end to the law once and for all by paying the price of sin fully for you and me. Therefore we are no longer under the law anymore but under grace which enables us to live by even a higher standard, so to speak.

However, the grace of God in Jesus Christ still directs man to the same end! – Love for God and love for his neighbor. Nevertheless, He has given us a completely new and different means to attain that end, ( "that grace of enablement".)

Grace begins with a miraculous operation of the Holy Spirit within the believers’ heart. The result of this operation is called "being born again" or "being born of the Spirit".

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take away the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh". (Ezek. 36:26)

VICTORY IN A BORN AGAIN SPIRIT

Through this new covenant the sinner's nature is completely changed within. The old sinful fallen nature is taken away and in its place a new heart and a new spirit is implanted within. Thus, it becomes natural for the man who has been recreated by God's spirit to walk in God's ways and to do God's will. The new nature is in harmony with God's nature and God's laws. When we are born again by the Spirit of God, the fruit of the Spirit will start to manifest in our lives.

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

The fruit of the Spirit is the love of God manifested in every aspect of the human character and conduct. The spiritual fruit does not need to be controlled by any other law. Therefore, Paul says, "Against such there is no law".

" But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Gal5:22-23)
