“What kind of God do you believe and trust in?” asked Chung Siew Leng on 18th of March in the Damansara Jaya chapter of the Full Gospel Business Men (FGB) Fellowship under Desmond Frank.
Despite the fact that we are Christians, sometimes we doubt whether God will come to help us when we encounter difficulties and challenges in our lives. We begin to doubt His character.
“We need to know his characteristics, so that when we go in prayer, we are assured of the kind of God we have,” said Chung. “Knowing God as through His Word and His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, we are confident that He will do something beautiful in our lives.”
Scripture tells us that Jesus ‘was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs.’ (Acts 2:22) We have a God who performs miracles.
Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” (Luke 18:27)
Jesus performed many miracles, which defied the laws of nature in front of his disciples. One of them was multiplying the two loaves and five fishes to feed 5000 people. (Mark 6:37-44)
Yet on that same night, the disciples got frightened when they saw Him walking on the lake. (Mark 6:46-50) Scripture tells us that they did not understand about the miracle of the loaves and fish, because their hearts were hardened. (Mark 6:52)
Likewise, although we believe that Christ died for us, we find it hard to believe that God still do miracles today. But ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.’ (Heb 13:8) If He performed miracles during His days on earth, He would perform miracles today. God does not change but He intervenes in His own mysterious ways for our own good.
Chung recalled how he prayed to God under a tree in Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, to open the doors of opportunities to share the gospel in the marketplace. He was eager to share with anyone who would listen, irrespective of what station of life they may be in.
After the prayer, the FGB appointed him to start a chapter in Jalan Bukit Bintang in a small lawyer office. They only had four members who met weekly to worship God. This went on for several months but Chung was not discouraged because he remembered Phil 4:6-7.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil 4:6-7)
With prayer alone without handing out leaflets and making phone calls, people started streaming in until the office burst with 43 people. At that time, a bank manager and an accountant brought Francis Yeoh of YTL to the chapter.
Francis Yeoh kept returning to the FGB chapter week after week. Soon, Chung encouraged Yeoh to visit the Full Gospel Assembly (FGA) in Jalan Kuchai Lama. And he eventually brought his whole family to worship in the church.
Later on, Chung was invited to work in Yeoh’s company, where most of the senior staffs and staffs were nonbelievers. But with the help and mercy of God, all of Yeoh’s brothers and sister gave their lives to the Lord, attending church today with their family. In fact, they helped to open the Holy Trinity Bukit Bintang (HTBB) church at the Roof Garden of Lot 10.
“Many of us has the Holy Spirit transformed us when we trusted and received our Lord Jesus as our personal Savior,” said Chung. “But as time goes on, the Holy Spirit is merely the resident and not the president of our lives. The things and affairs of this world take precedence of God in our lives.
Making the Holy Spirit his president, Chung has experienced God’s healing touch in his life. One miracle was the removal of a kidney stone from his body, which caused him much agony. While Chung was showering and praising God, he felt a traveling heat coming down from his chest to his urinal area, and the stone was released! While naturally discharging the stone is medically possible, the travelling heat sensation is medically impossible. Chung knew God has miraculously healed him!
So, how do we know that our God is a God of miracle?
Firstly, God is omnipotent and above the natural laws. He walked on water. He opened the eyes of the blind to see. He even raised the dead.
“I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? (Jer 32:27)
Secondly, God is omniscient. Everything in our heart lies bare before Him.
For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. (Luke 8:17)
Thirdly, God is omnipresent.
Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” declares the LORD. “Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the LORD. (Jer 23:24)
“We never walk alone. Don’t say that you’re lonely. You cannot be afraid with challenges and difficulties,” said Chung.
The Jews were carried from Jerusalem to Babylon, where they suffered 70 years of cruelty and discrimination. Yet, God spoke through Jeremiah, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jer 29:11)
“It is God’s promise to His people. (Jer 29:11) But that’s also God’s promise for us today. As a result, we have a meaning and purpose in life. If you avail yourself, God will work in you and through you,” said Chung.
He also shared how God connected him with David Pawson, a man who brought him back to faith when he bought Pawson’s cassette tape in Malaysia. At that time, he prayed to God for an opportunity to say thank you for the message tapes. God arranged an informal meeting in Hong Kong with Pawson at the Full Gospel Businessman Asian Convention. Prior to the convention, he did not know that Pawson was one of the conference speakers.
But while Chung was contented in meeting Pawson already, God has greater plans. Pawson was coming for a two-week evangelical meeting in Malaysia. While praying in the cell group for Pawson and the team, a cell group member approached and told Chung that her brother was in the same team with Pawson. Chung ended up hosting for Pawson and became good friends with him. The Lord God who is omniscient arranged the meeting.
“God is interested in the little things in your life because He has plans to prosper you and not to harm you,” said Chung. “He works in mysterious ways, not necessarily the way that we want. And this can happen to anyone of us if we make the Holy Spirit the president and not the resident of our lives.”
Believe in your God. He still does miracles today!
