It was a bright and sunny day at C3 Subang Jaya, when I came in to join in on their service. The lively praise and worship team increased in numbers and it was even more amazing that there were so many visitors that particular day. The sermon of the day was focused on shedding light on the Holy Spirit (the third entity of the Trinity), in order for everyone to better understand him.
Senior Pastor Clarence preached the Word that day and mentioned how the Holy Spirit is the least understood person as well as the least spoken about person of the Holy Trinity.
“Churches don’t share a lot about the Holy Spirit because he’s mysterious. The Holy Spirit is important! In fact after your salvation the Holy Spirit is the most important person in your journey and development as a Christian,” he said.
The Holy Spirit is not a force (impersonal power) that is given to us by God for us to tap into.
“He is a personality.. a person.. Jesus refers to him as a person” shared Clarence.
Many have argued about the fact that the Holy Trinity was made up because it wasn’t mentioned in the Bible. It’s true that it wasn’t mentioned, it was the early Church who coined the trinity to describe the God of the Bible.
The word Trinity means Unity which in reality means that God is three in one.
“It’s like you got ice, steam and water which are three different forms but in fact H2O. It is all the same but it is manifested in three different forms” said Clarence. “Our God is a plurality, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit is ONE God."
Then God said, “Let US make mankind in OUR image, in OUR likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26)
Clarence mentioned that the plurality of God is all over scripture just like the verse above when God said, “Let “US” make mankind in “OUR” image” Notice how God did not say “ME or “MY”.
Some other Scriptures in the Bible that prove the existence of the Trinity are:-
“And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 3:9)
“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:16-17)
“No man takes it from me, but I it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.” (John 10:18)
“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. “ (Romans 8:12)
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)
“Who raised Jesus from the dead? God, all three. They were all active and present in the resurrection” shared Clarence.
The Old testament was where God the Father was the main focus, while the New Testament was where Jesus the son became the focus. Now on earth, the Holy Spirit is the focus and it is clearly shown in the scripture below where Jesus said,
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.” (John 14:16)
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” (John 16:7)
Jesus on earth was limited as to what He could do, because he could only have an external influence on the people he came in contact with, and that’s why he left and in return sent the world the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Helper and the Comforter. “The Holy Spirit is not limited physically or geographically! He comes and dwell in the inside of each one of you” said Clarence. The Holy Spirit is put there to transform us and our hearts, if only we allow it to.
You don’t have to fight between who to pray for whether to God the Father, Jesus the son or the Holy Spirit. “We have this problem because we try to understand it with our own reasoning” he said. The Holy Spirit in the Bible in described as the spirit of Jesus who baptizes us and is the gift the Father promised and is also known as the spirit of the Father. There is no competition between them; all you need to understand is the role between them.
The Christian life is not meant to live manually, we are meant to live power assisted by the Holy Spirit, without him we will struggle. “God put His power inside of us so that you can be all that He has called you to be, to live the life He has prepared for you and to enjoy the abundant life. If you try to do it by your own strength you are going to be frustrated” said Clarence. Allow it to intercede on your behalf; God gives you the desire to do the right thing through the Holy Spirit.
"Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 For it is God, who all the while effectively at work in you, energizing and creating in you the power and the desire both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight.” (Philippians 2:12-13)
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18)
