We all face fears. Each one of us have experienced fears in our lives. While we might think that we are alone in facing these fears, we are not! And even better, we can overcome these fears by walking in faith, believing that we ‘can do all things through Christ who strengthens us’. Here are some common fears that God wants us to overcome by walking in faith.
Fear of Failure
So many of us are afraid of failing. We are afraid that we will not be able to succeed. We are afraid of making mistakes. There are times when things will work out and there are times when they won’t. However, when things don’t work out (or don’t work out the way we want it to) we just have to shake it off, move on, and move forward. We must not let the fear of failing stop us from living an abundant life. We will experience failures. It is part and parcel of life, but no one is a failure. Failing at something doesn’t make you a failure. Failure comes when we quit trying.
Fear of Being Hurt
We live in a fallen world and try as we might to protect ourselves, we will get hurt. But we must not let this fear control us. We will experience rejection and sometimes others will dislike us for no reason apparent to us. The good news is, the Healer lives on the inside of us, and as soon as we go to Him and surrender our hurts, He will work in our lives to remove the hurt and rejection that we have experienced!
Fear of Change
Sometimes we fear the unknown. We are afraid of letting go of the old and to take hold of the new. Some people have characters that are more ‘daring’ and embrace change easily, and others simply do not. While cautiousness is good, we must not drag around ways or habits that are not working anymore. Change can be good. For example, taking on new responsibilities and moving forward with what God wants to do.
Fear That Things Will Never Change
While some may be afraid of change, others are afraid that things will stay the same forever. Thoughts such as “I’ll never change, my family will never change, I’ll never get married, I’ll be stuck in this job forever” can easily take root in our minds. We can ruminate and go over these thoughts again and again. But truth is, everything changes, except God! When these thoughts go on in our minds, we need to be alert and know that God has a plan for our lives. Jeremiah 29:11 says
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”.
Jeremiah 29:11
The changes He has for us WILL happen.
Dread
Have you ever experience a vague sense that something bad was going to happen? For some of us, we have been taught to expect the worst, and we just wonder when the disaster will happen. Instead of dreading the next bad thing to happen, form the habit of wondering what the next blessing will be, and start thanking God for all that He has done! Isaiah 30:18 says ‘Therefore the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you……’ God wants to be good to us, so we need to stop living in dread. Know that He has good plans for you and even if and when bad things happen, we will come through victorious because He is always there for us.
God did not plan for us to live in fear. Whatever we go through, know that we with faith we can overcome anything that comes our way. We’re going to feel fear sometimes, but walk in faith, and do not let fears control our lives. Remember Isaiah 41:10
“Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’Isaiah 41:10
