16th Nov 2012. By Ezra Chim. CM –
A powerful sermon was preached in Gereja Baptis Rasah Jaya on the 11th November on “The Impact and Influence of a Godly Person.” The speaker for the morning service was Rev. W.K. John Chin who is a seasoned church planter and an evangelist based in Seremban.
Why lead the Godly life? And what can we learn from a godly King in the Bible? The scripture text was taken from 2 Chronicles 34:1-3, 8, 21 :
1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem.
2 And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his father David; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the wooden images, the carved images, and the molded images.
8 In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, to purify the land and the temple, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the ruler of the city, with Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the temple of the Lord his God.
21 “Go and inquire of the Lord for me and for the remnant in Israel and Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the Lord’s anger that is poured out on us because those who have gone before us have not kept the word of the Lord; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written in this book.”
Pastor John Chin spoke on influences of a godly King Josiah which we can learn and to encourage all of us to lead with confidence as Christians in the community around us. The main points were:
1. Josiah did the RIGHT THINGS in the sight of God when he became king at 8 years old (verse 2).
2. He WALKED UPRIGHTLY in the ways of his father DAVID (verse 2).
3. He continued to SEEK GOD as a young 16 years old king (verse 3).
4. He REMOVED IDOLATRY from Israel at the age of 20 years old (verse 3).
5. He GREATLY RESPECTED the House of God at 26 years old (Verse 8).
6. Josiah always SOUGHT AFTER GOD’S WILL (verse 21).
The sermon focuses on the young king’s journey of faith that prompted him to stand up to a society that had rejected God. Instead of going with the flow, Josiah, as the teenage ruler of Judah in the seventh century B.C., boldly instituted God-honouring reforms aimed at restoring the nation’s spiritual and moral foundation.
In conclusion, Pastor John Chin contrasted the impact of the generations to come from a godly servant as compared to an atheist.
Research done by Professor Benjamin B. Warfield at Princeton of 1,394 descendants of a great man of God, Jonathan Edwards, his descendants included…
– 13 College Presidents
– 65 College Professors
– 30 Judges
– 100 Lawyers
– 60 Doctors
– 75 Army and Navy Officers
– 100 Pastors
– 60 Authors of prominence
– 3 United States senators
– 80 U.S. Government Public servants – blessing and asset to the country.
In contrast, Professor Benjamin Warfield also traced 1,200 descendants of an atheist, Max Jukes in the same area, his descendants included…
– 310 died as paupers and bankrupts
– 150 criminals (including 7 murderers )
– More than 100 alcoholics
– Half of the female descendants, became prostitutes
– 540 descendants – Cost U.S. Govt. $ 1.25 Million in funds then ( a liability to the country ).
As believers, we are encouraged to lead with confidence a righteous life and to make an impact on our society with Godly values. The Lord in His mercy and grace will add blessings to our present generation and also to our generations to come. He is faithful and true. Be Blessed! Amen!
