Psalm 99 – The LORD our Mighty King Reigns
(by Daniel Wong)
We live in a world where the rule of God by His Word is increasingly rejected. The rise of new age spirituality, atheism, religious extremism and gender confusion has made this world a depressing environment for those who seek to pursue the purposes of God. For some, God seems so distant. Perhaps even uncaring of the brokenness of His creation. Into this darkness and hopelessness, the Psalmist in Psalm 99 reminds us of the precious truth that there is indeed a sovereign God who rules over the nations and over the heavenly hosts. He is the awesome King who is set apart from his creation. He alone is worthy of worship and adoration.
In spite of the wickedness so prevalent in our world today, we can be comforted that God cares and will bring about ultimate justice and righteousness. This is not wishful thinking because this same God sent his final Word – our Lord Jesus Christ into our world that through His death and resurrection, he might established a new covenant that guarantees forgiveness for all who trust in Him. We can be confident that this promise keeping God will reign again over a new creation. Moses, Aaron and Samuel are among the illustrious list of OT saints who serve this great God and found that He answers prayers.
Let us likewise seek the glory of God in our circle of influence and find that He answers our prayers, for it is in the deepest darkness that the great news of the gospel shines most brightly.
Let’s Read Psalm 99
1 The Lord reigns,
let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let the earth shake.
2 Great is the Lord in Zion;
he is exalted over all the nations.
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name—
he is holy.
4 The King is mighty, he loves justice—
you have established equity;
in Jacob you have done
what is just and right.
5 Exalt the Lord our God
and worship at his footstool;
he is holy.
6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel was among those who called on his name;
they called on the Lord
and he answered them.
7 He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;
they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them.
8 Lord our God,
you answered them;
you were to Israel a forgiving God,
though you punished their misdeeds.
9 Exalt the Lord our God
and worship at his holy mountain,
for the Lord our God is holy.
Let’s Pray
Gracious God, Our Heavenly Father, we exalt you, we worship you for you are the mighty and holy God who reigns in heaven above and on the earth below and one who speaks to us in your Word. Even when it’s hard, help us to hang on to the truth that all nations are ultimately under your control. In the midst of the evil of humanity, help us to be confident that you will bring about your justice in that final judgement. We thank you especially for Jesus. We thank you that because his death and resurrection those who believe in Him are forgiven. Thank you that the judgement we deserve fell upon our loving Saviour. We give you all glory and honour in Jesus’ precious and wonderful name. Amen.
