Psalm 66 – Praises to God for His Awesome Works and for His Answer to Prayer.
(Written by Eugene Woon)
It is a song or psalm from King David, praising God for His awesome works and power. Giving thanks to God for His gracious benefits, His faithful deliverances and His dealings with His people.
With an introductory hymn, David was calling for all nations to praise God, where he wrote and said, “Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth!! Sing out to honor His glorious Name with praises.” (verses 1-4).
David then invited the beholder to “Come and see” the awesome works of God; and to remind us of His power in the miraculous event, when God turned the Red sea into dry land, so that His children could cross the sea on foot (verses 5-7).
David recapitulated on the many wonderful blessings God has bestowed upon His people. Even though, they were tested and purified like refined silver, they went through trials, through fire and water; but in the end, God brought them out to rich fulfillment and great abundance (verses 8-12). Like God’s children, often enough, we went through tribulations and challenges in life, but God still sustain us with His grace and mercy.
David walked intimately with God, when in deep trouble he fulfilled and paid his vows with burnt offerings to God (verses 13-15).
“Come and hear, all you who fear God,” declared David, with thanksgivings on the special favor of the Lord to himself. He demonstrated the right attitude before God as in verse 18 which says: “If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.” Like David, we need to come before God, with a pure and clean heart to repent and confess our sins; for God sees the purity of our heart and answers to our prayers. (verses 16-20).
Let’s Read Psalm 66
To the Chief Musician. A Song. A Psalm.
1 Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth!
2 Sing out the honor of His name;
Make His praise glorious.
3 Say to God,
“How awesome are Your works!
Through the greatness of Your power
Your enemies shall submit themselves to You.
4 All the earth shall worship You
And sing praises to You;
They shall sing praises to Your name.”
5 Come and see the works of God;
He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men.
6 He turned the sea into dry land;
They went through the river on foot.
There we will rejoice in Him.
7 He rules by His power forever;
His eyes observe the nations;
Do not let the rebellious exalt themselves.
8 Oh, bless our God, you peoples!
And make the voice of His praise to be heard,
9 Who keeps our soul among the living,
And does not allow our feet to be moved.
10 For You, O God, have tested us;
You have refined us as silver is refined.
11 You brought us into the net;
You laid affliction on our backs.
12 You have caused men to ride over our heads;
We went through fire and through water;
But You brought us out to rich fulfillment.
13 I will go into Your house with burnt offerings;
I will pay You my vows,
14 Which my lips have uttered
And my mouth has spoken when I was in trouble.
15 I will offer You burnt sacrifices of fat animals,
With the sweet aroma of rams;
I will offer bulls with goats.
16 Come and hear, all you who fear God,
And I will declare what He has done for my soul.
17 I cried to Him with my mouth,
And He was extolled with my tongue.
18 If I regard iniquity in my heart,
The Lord will not hear.
19 But certainly God has heard me;
He has attended to the voice of my prayer.
20 Blessed be God,
Who has not turned away my prayer,
Nor His mercy from me!
Let’s Pray
Blessed are You, O Lord! Teach us Your Statutes. With our lips, we have declare all Your wonderful works and the awesome deeds that You have done in our lives. How awesome and how great is Your power!!
May Your Glorious Name be praised in all the earth!!! Let Your presence be with us when we worship and sing Your praises. For if we had regard iniquity in our heart, the LORD would not hear us. So, let us approach Your throne of grace with confidence and with a contrite heart, to repent and ask for forgiveness of our sins; to receive Your mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
Heavenly Father, surely You have listened and heard our voice in prayer, and has not rejected our prayer or withheld Your love from us!
