Psalm 29 – The LORD of the Storm

(Written by Chia Eng Chuan)

King David, inspired by a thunderstorm, composed Psalm 29. The storm started somewhere over the Mediterranean Sea and moved inland to the Lebanon mountain range north of Israel. Accompanied by loud thunder and lightning, the storm continued its journey eastward to Mount Hermon where it turned south and travelled a further 125 km down to the wilderness in Kadesh where it finally dispersed.

King David’s dramatic description of the thunderstorm was a reflection of his own life experience of the glory and majesty of God. To him, the storm magnified the sovereignty of God and the power of God in His creation of nature, both of which revealed the glory of God. David likened the loud thunder and the brilliant flashes of lightning to the voice and glory of God. Just as nothing could stand in the way of the powerful storm, nothing and no one can stand in God’s way.

Even the mighty angels in heaven acknowledge and worship the Almighty God. His glory and his absolute sovereignty will be for all eternity. And in His great love for us, God freely blesses His people with His amazing grace and unceasing mercy. When we are weary, He vitalises us with His strength. When we face challenging and formidable circumstances, He comforts us with His peace. What more can we ask or hope for? Let us therefore join the heavenly hosts in worshipping our Almighty and Awesome God!

Let’s read Psalm 29

A psalm of David.

1 Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,

    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;

    worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;

    the God of glory thunders,

    the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.

4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;

the voice of the Lord is majestic.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;

    the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

6 He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,

    Sirion like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord strikes

    with flashes of lightning.

8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;

    the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the Lord twists the oaks

    and strips the forests bare.

And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;

    the Lord is enthroned as King forever.

11 The Lord gives strength to his people;

    the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Let’s pray,

Our heavenly Father, we acknowledge You as Almighty God, powerful in word and deed. There is none like You. Thank You for loving us and we are grateful that Your mercies endure forever. We worship You in Jesus name, Amen!
