19 Aug 2013 by Natasha Kim CM-

Come and discover that God can speak to you through a movie! CLM has been hosting a  3-week film series and its final film screening will be 20th August on the film "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel". It is facilitated by Rev. Geoffrey Williams, aka Monty, a highly sought after Spiritual Director and author of several award winning books.

The series began with the film The First Grader, followed by Salmon Fishing In The Yemen.

The focus of 'The First Grader' was on how our past impacts our present. Sometimes when things are happening, we don't know if it's a good or bad thing. What seemed very bad at the time, can turn out to be a gift in the end and what seemed good can turn out to be quite unfortunate. This movie invited us to look back at our past history (the story of our life) and ask ourselves how we carry the past into the present life.

As for 'Salmon Fishing In The Yemen', this movie invited us to consider our future. Someone asked, "How can an unknown future impact our present?" "Think of yourself as a parent", Monty said… "As a parent you have certain desires for your child, desires such a college education, think how that desired future impacts the life you live now".  In Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, we see how a certain desired future impacts the various characters in the film and we are invited to reflect on our own belief about who God is for us and how that impacts how we live in the present.

In this last film "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"  a group of retired British pensioners move to a retirement hotel in India and there are forced to come to terms with their lives, their pasts, their present, and their futures. In other words they have to confront the stories they have told themselves all their life, are telling themselves in the present and the stories they tell themselves about the future.

In this final film, we are asked to consider our lives…how have we lived, how are we living now and what are our expectations for the future.  To what extent are our stories touched by God's love and been redeemed? Or are we holding on to that which is already dead and does not give us life anymore?
