Twenty-year old Carmen Soo was born and raised as an obedient child in a Christian family. Nevertheless, she only truly knew God as her personal Lord and Savior at 16 years old, when she was touched by the Holy Spirit.
“Before that, I did not really know Christ. Going to Sunday school was like a routine because I did not understand then,” said Carmen.
A soft-spoken girl, she described herself as “very introvert” and “having few friends.” She could not speak in front of other people, but the Lord gradually changed her by challenging her out of the comfort zone.
Since she entered University Malaya (UM), she was given the opportunity to serve such as being a cell group leader of the medical department amongst other committee member roles.
Even her major as a medical student was led by the Lord. When she was completing the form to choose majors, she received a prompting to choose the medical field over and over. Owing her excellent academic results to good teachers, she was successfully chosen for the medical major!
“I was not a compassionate person before. But God changed my heart. Now, when I look at the people who are poor and suffering with illnesses, I felt compassion for them… I felt like crying,” said Carmen. She believes that God want her to be a medical missionary.
Ezekiel 36:26-27
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
Amidst her busy schedule as a medical student, she grows in the Lord from preparing for the medical cell groups.
“The Lord helped me to become a good listener, to be more observant and concerned about other people,” said Carmen. “Because I don’t tend to talk, people would share their problems with me and we would pray together.”
James 1:19
My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
Her change of heart was not out of deliberation, but a natural transformation by walking with the Lord.
Recently, she encountered hiccups of her much-appreciated friendship but God was good to send people to care and pray for her even without her asking.
“God is always there for you. Sometimes, even though you think that God is not there, He is actually there at work in silence. And even if you are indulging in worldly sin at that time, God will still pull you back from straying,” said Carmen.
Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Now, she is learning to handle her relationship with people better. Since her accepting of Christ, the barriers between her and her parents had also crumbled to a closer relationship.
