Battle with Terminal Illness: Saved by the Lord from Fourth Stage Colon Cancer – Sis Teng Tung Hung

From a testimony dictated by 4th-stage cancer survivor Teng Tung Hung and first written and shared by her daughters and grandson, Su Mee Ai, Su Mee Nguk & Desmond Lu.

In medical terms, a terminal illness is a disease that has reached a stage that cannot be cured or adequately treated. The term is more commonly used for the end-stage of progressive diseases such as cancer or advanced heart disease. Such cases are usually expected to result in the death of the patient.

In the case of Teng Tung Hung, the outcome was instead a compelling demonstration of the mighty healing power of our Lord Jesus Christ and a testament that left a lasting impact on the faith and life of her family.

Teng grew up in a Christian family. This was a crucial formative influence on her, planting a deep desire to know the Lord intimately. She shared, ‘My mother was a faithful believer, but my father was a nominal Christian. I seldom attended church when I was young, much less after my marriage. Even though I was physically away from Jesus, deep in my heart, I always have the desire to reconnect with Him.’

It was not until one day that Teng took full courage to step into church again when Jesus spoke to her through the pastor on the pulpit. ‘The pastor reminded me, “Jesus’s door is forever open for you; you can enter it anytime.” After the church service, heading to my car, a ray of light suddenly shone before me. Immediately, I recognized that it was Jesus’s glory revealed unto me. That morning, He brought me out from darkness into His marvelous light. From that day, I always know that Jesus loves me. I decided to commit myself to Him again, leading to me regularly attending and serving the church.’

On 22nd February 2022, Teng started to fall sick. It began with a high fever accompanied by an accelerated heartbeat, and she was hospitalized for 5 days. She related the traumatic experience, ‘I was not fully well on the day of discharge; the doctor detected some white spot on my liver. In April 2022, I returned to the general hospital and had a rather more concise checkup. The result was dreadful. The doctor confirmed my diagnosis; I had stage-four colon cancer. The tumor had spread from my colon to my liver. According to the doctor, even with treatment, my survival rate would remain slim at 25% to 30%. I was devastated and decided to give up the treatment.’

In February 2022, Teng discovered that she had 4th stage colon cancer and the doctors told her that her chances of survival was slim even with treatment

Teng did not seek any treatments during the initial five months. During this period, she had consistent online meetings with her daughters residing in various parts of Malaysia. They worshiped together, came together in one accord, confessed, and renounced all the conscious and unconscious guilt and curses brought down by their ancestors. ‘I also confessed my weaknesses and lack of faith in Him,’ she expressed. ‘I declared that it was not the end of my life – not until Jesus said so. I went through this pain and suffering with persistent prayer and Holy Communions. I placed my trust in Him, in the faith that He will heal me.’

One evening, Teng felt unusually sick. The family gathered again for prayer. On that day, one of her daughters received revelation from Jesus that they were not wrestling against flesh and blood but against the spiritual rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers over this present darkness – against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Eph 6:12). With this revelation, the family went into spiritual warfare. ‘Through prayers and by the power of Jesus, I was released from being a spiritual hostage. Unlike every other night, I did not feel burdened or uncomfortable and had quite a great rest. And all I can say is that it is all due to the glory of Jesus.’

In September 2022, Teng started to bleed during pass motion. The tumour in her colon had enlarged. Hence, surgery had become inevitable. By Jesus’s grace, she made it through, even given her slim chance of survival. The operation was successful, and she even recovered well from it. The sample of the tumour cells was sent to the laboratory for diagnostic analysis. Surprisingly, not a single cancer cell was detected in the specimen!

‘The doctor could not explain it, but we believe it was a miracle! Chemotherapy was subsequently arranged to ensure I received the complete treatment, so I obeyed and placed my faith in Him. I started my chemotherapy in a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur. The journey to the city was long and tiring, and the cost of each treatment was expensive. I decided I wanted to do the treatment in my hometown. My heart was even more disheartened when both the doctor and my husband rejected my request to seek medical treatment in my hometown. For this, I cried out to the Lord every day. He reminded me through Ephesians 5:22, “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” I obeyed and continued the treatment at Kuala Lumpur.’

Jesus stepped into the situation. ‘Jesus is merciful. During one of the treatments, the doctor discovered that one of my daughters works as a civil servant. With this, he immediately suggested alternate treatment at a government hospital in my hometown,’ Teng shared. ‘He further informed us that the treatment for senior citizens at government hospitals is free, and even the cost of the special medicine is much cheaper than at the private hospitals. We were overjoyed with the news; no words fully describe my feelings.

‘I am truly thankful for His mercy and faithfulness. Once again, He answered my prayers. This incident reminds me of the night before my first departure to KL. Jesus appeared to me in a dream. He wore a glorious white robe, looking and smiling at me with His arm wide open. It is a reminder that He is with me.’

Chemotherapy treatments can be a challenging experience, and it impacted Teng greatly. Every night, she would kneel and plead to Jesus to strengthen her body for her to undergo the treatment. ‘The Lord is in control; subsequent follow-ups have proven the effectiveness of the treatment. My CEA reading used to be as high as 1385, but now it has fallen below 100 points.’

Though the chemotherapy treatments were tough, Teng placed her faith in the Lord and Christ brought her through. Her CEA reading which used to be as high as 1385 has now fallen below 100 points.

In July 2022, Teng underwent her first CT scan. ‘As I lay on the movable table and slid through the center of the CT scanner, I saw two angels with moderate height standing at each side of the machine. Their appearance was so bright, brighter than the regular lamp light, facing each other and holding something seemingly a rod. This unusual encounter did not bring me fear. Instead, there was a sense of peace and comfort. I repeated the CT scan in October. This time, the Holy Spirit filled my heart, and He gave me a song saying, “The Lord is with you, and He watches over you anytime and every time.” I praise the Lord for His protection.

There was another occasion when Teng felt weak and unwell during a Sunday service. However, she did not want her physical weaknesses to disrupt her worship. ‘Once again, I pleaded to Him to rejuvenate me. Amazingly, when the praise and worship session started, I felt a strong sense of healing rained upon me. My feeble body was being strengthened instantaneously. It was amazing! Jesus is the only true healer, and He healed me!’

‘What I have shared here is only a fraction of my encounter with Jesus Christ,’ Teng expressed. ‘There are so many other experiences throughout this period that are hard to describe in words. I thank Jesus for His love. This unpredicted life tragedy has trained me to place full dependence and trust in Him. I kept His words in my heart and to be joyful, for the Lord says a joyful heart is a good medicine (Pro 17:22). Jesus is truly amazing. He is the only true living God. His love and mercies are great beyond measure. All glory to Jesus.’

Footnote by Teng’s daughters:

Mom is truly an amazing woman. From the day she fell ill until today, she never complained. Instead, she spoke many words of gratitude. She surrenders herself fully to Jesus Christ. Devotion and kneeling on her knees are her daily routine. She did not only pray for herself but also interceded for all her children and descendants. Although the suffering is real, Almighty Jesus’s glory and love surpasses it.

Our family has experienced tremendous transformation and revival in the last two years. Relationships were restored, family members came to Jesus, mental suffering was healed, finances were upgraded, and many more. Even my dad, who is a nominal Christian, finally came to know Jesus through Mom’s experiences and her example of faith during this challenging time of her life. He started to read the Bible and even laid hands on Mom for prayers and petitions. Jesus is loving. He listened and responded to Dad’s prayers frequently. Jesus Christ is truly awe-inspiring! He showed us that healing and transformation are possible even in difficult times because He has resurrected from death. All glory to the Highest God.
