Besides being our ever-present Friend and Guide, the Holy Spirit is also our ever-present Divine Healer. Last Friday, Pr Robert Ssesanga shared about the healing grace and power of the Holy Spirit in a Miracle Healing session organized by the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship in Sunflower Hall. He took his text from the account of the healing of the paralytic man, found in Luke 5:17-26. He shared that this passage encompasses many aspects and lessons about how God operates His healing power and the attitudes we should have in order to receive this gift from God.
The most important part of a divine healing service is that the presence of God must be there (‘..the power of the Lord was present for Him (Jesus) to heal the sick’: Luke 5:1b). This means that the healing comes through the power of God, not through men. As believers, when we come for a Divine Healing service, we should come with expectation, and this entails a certain attitude of humility and reverence. In every one of Pr Ssesanga’s healing rallies, the first thing believers are led to do is to worship in the spirit.
The huge efforts the paralytic’s friends took in order to ensure that he could meet Jesus also said something about them. They knew, and they had faith that since the healing power was of God, that it could heal every sort of ailments and illness, including their friend’s paralysis. They had an attitude of persistence, not one of doubt or laid-backness. They were positioned. Faith is intangible but it can be seen through the actions of believers (Luke 5:20). It is an active element of our spirits that comes through the work of the Spirit.
Luke 5:20
When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
Ailments can come through many means. Sometimes, it is caused by the sin that has come into this world, and many times in the Bible, sin is equated to sickness. In fact, Jesus healed the paralytic by forgiving him of his sins (Luke 5:20). Other times, though, ailments can also come through a feeling of guilt that has become bondage. Jesus knew that was the case in the spirit of the paralytic man. The same power of God that forgives sins also has the power to heal.
Our mindset presents to us visible challenges. Perhaps we have seen how someone else, or even ourselves going for numerous healing services without any results, and we think that either God does not heal or that we are too far from Him. Pr Ssesanga shared that all we have to consider really is the Word of God and soak ourselves in it. Healing comes through experience and faith in the Word of God. In 1 Peter 2:24, the Bible tells us that Jesus Himself bore our sins in His body at Calvary so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness, and that by His wounds we have been healed. This had been done for us in the past, and how we respond to it has a lot of significance.
1 Peter 2:24
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
Another attitude we should have is one of total yielding to God. Pr Ssesanga defines miracles as an intervention by God that changes a chain of events in the affairs of men particularly when a man has come to the end of his rope. Divine Healing is not magic; it requires the participation of the believer in the process and their obedience to the Word of God.
In the account of the healing of the 10 lepers (Luke 17:11-19), only one of them returned to glorify the Lord. We should learn to glorify the Lord. Spread the news of His work in us as an encouragement and as a visible proof of His work. Develop an attitude of gratefulness. The paralytic man acted immediately in faith and had an attitude of gratefulness (Luke 5:25-26).
Luke 5:25-26
25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
Coming to the practical aspects of Divine Healing, Pr Ssesanga shared that healing comes by the authority of God. It has a tangible manifestation through a sensation of tingling, heat, or sometimes a light breeze blowing on our physical bodies. Sometimes, God will reveal specific cases. That is the moment when we should connect by faith.
Jesus said to the blind men in Matthew 9:29 that it was according to their faith that they were healed. God and His power is the same today as it was then. What would you do if you receive the call of God’s hope and promises? Start by thanking Him, and then take hold of those promises.
Matthew 9:29
English Standard Version (ESV)
29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.”
Pr Ssesanga also shared that Divine Healing is often a process. Sometimes, the devil may increase his attacks and there may be a relapse of ailments. In moments like these, the thing to do is to thank God for having done His work in us, lean and reply to God, and take authority. We have authority through Jesus.
The same faith that called us to a saving relationship with our Father will help us to stand strong. We did not come to that saving relationship through any visible signs. It came though the gift of God. Pr Ssesanga exhorts that our faith in our relationship with Him must be activated.
There was a powerful healing session that night. One lady who was previously confined to a wheelchair gained the ability to walk.
One man who was almost blind improved his sight and started to regain his ability to see.
Many people were healed of their back pains.
One man came through the saving knowledge of Christ, regarded by Pr Ssesanga as the greatest breakthrough of the night.
The Holy Spirit also ministered to many others with internal ailments like kidney problems and cancer and many of them were slain in the Spirit.
Note: Pr Robert Ssesanga and his wife Martha will be ministering at the Trinity Community Centre on the 7th and 8th of March (7.30pm) and 9th of March (10am)
