College is an exciting time of our life, where we enter with much anticipation of our newfound independence and first-time experiences.
Here are 6 ways be awesome in college!
#1 Bounce to the Beat, not to the Lyrics
I love mainstream songs! But while I bounce to that catchy beat, I find some lyrics deliver a consistent message of: sex is okay, pop this pill, drink that beer, skip that class, smooch that girl, get me drunk, cheating’s fine, and lose yourself. After all, YOLO! While you dance to that beat, guard your mind against the lyrics. Ground yourself in the Word of God and live it. You will be wise beyond your years.
#2 Get a Part-time Job
If you think age is a sign of maturity, think again because age does not commensurate with maturity. There are young people who think and act maturely and older people who think and act immaturely. But if you would like to mature quicker emotionally and mentally, pick up a part-time job or an internship to experience the responsibilities of a working adult. When you experience that, you will start to appreciate the money and time spent during your college days.
#3 Timeless Good Character still Works
As much as some contemporary culture tells you that being lazy, living without a direction, or basically being stupid are ways to live an exciting and adventurous life, these qualities prepare you for a dysfunctional life. The traditional way of—being diligent, keeping integrity, being punctual, being polite, and living with a goal in life (basically good biblical principles)—is what smart and successful people do. Spend time reading books… many books.
#4 Find out what you like and dislike
Use your extra time to discover what you like and what you dislike, also what you are naturally good at and what you are naturally bad in. Harness on what you like and what you are good in. Do not start exploring only when you start working because you will have less time then. If you find yourself interested in another degree, talk to a few working adults who have completed your degree before making a decision. Find a mentor who is working in the same industry as you if you can.
#5 Get to know different types of people
Don’t isolate yourself with only Christian friends or only non-Christian friends. Have a wide circle of friends and get to know them in person. You can control the influence of your friends on you by determining how much time you want to spend with them. Learn from their life experiences. Make authentic friendships.
#6 You may want to date but no sex
You can experience dating but make a firm decision of not having sex. Your body is the temple of Christ, where the Spirit of God resides in you. He loves you and you do not need to prove anything to get His Love and affection. Learn from your dating experiences of who you actually are. But if you would like to maximize your college time, you can choose to delay your dating experience. Your preference will change anyway as you mature into a working adult. Plus, you are saving sex for marriage.
Have an awesome college life!
