Wisdom is Gained Backwards

17 Oct 2013 by Joseph Tan-

In this technologically-savvy age, we tend to think forward when it comes to progress and achievement. However, great lessons in life and the ability to act wisely in the future depends upon our respect for what happened in the past. Without that right retrospective understanding of lessons in the past, we are prone to repeat the mistakes of history and bungle away precious opportunities in the future.

The way forward starts by paying careful attention to the wise lessons of the past.

1 Cor 10:11-12

These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us,on whom the culmination of the ages has come. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

Often, the advice given is "follow your heart" – this is a dangerous life philosophy because our heart's emotions is prone to error and bias.

Jer 17:9

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

A better way to prepare for life's future challenges is to seek the truth and learn from unchanging life principles about relationships, integrity, character and morality. Just because it "feels right" may not necessary mean that it is right.

James 1:17-18

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

2 Tim 3:16-17

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Mat 7:24-25

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

In this week's Wise-Video, you will learn three practical steps to look back so that you can garner enough wisdom to live in the present and also to seize the opportunities of the future.

"Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." ~ Edmund Burke.
