Chong Keng Sen was captivated by God’s Word when he tried to argue against the contents of the Bible. This Bible-tearing man found God instead while doing it and went through a miraculous journey of conversation to become a Christian, and now a pastor. In this article, Pastor Chong talks about his heavenly experience and an angelic experience that transformed him even further.
Wounded Heart
Pastor Chong’s mother died after giving birth to him due to complications. So he never knew his mom. His dad was involved in the anti-Japanese movement which was linked to the Communist Party of Malaya (MCP).
His father had to run and hide after fighting the Japanese because the British government was going after the MCP. Nevertheless, he was killed in the struggle.
“But I had very good grandparents. Grandpa was the one who taught me politics and encouraged me to colour with chalks. He let me draw on the walls of his house so I drew characters from the movies especially after coming back from a movie. Grandpa even bought me a bigger blackboard. I had a very good childhood but I was very lonely,” Pastor Chong said.
He carried the hurts from his childhood – the loss of his parents – through the pursuance of his tertiary education and vocation as an art lecturer.
Caught up in Heaven
One day, Pastor Chong felt like worshipping God and took along some of his students to camp in Templer’s Park. They looked forward to a wonderful time there. He had often gone there alone to relax.
“The five of us camped for four days to worship the Lord. One night, we got tired after chit-chatting around the camp fire and were washing up at about 12 midnight.
“My students heard the singing but they did not say anything. They were very quiet lying down, transfixed. As I laid down a student said, ‘I am hearing angelic songs, you know?’ I replied, ‘You sure, you are hearing ah?’
“Then I turned and asked the other two students, they replied and said they were also hearing it! But I wasn’t. We all came out of our tents and checked with each other. All of them were hearing it but I wasn’t,” Pastor Chong said. So they stood around the camp fire as it slowly died.
One of them suddenly started to cry and fell on her knees. “It was like that in the Book of Revelation every knee shall bow,” he added, “Then everyone started weeping with joy, exuberant joy! I was looking at them but I couldn’t see and couldn’t feel
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2: 9-11)
“They saw heavenly brightness and felt the joy exactly like what was described in the Book of Revelation. They heard the choruses of ‘Hallelujah’ ringing and ringing and ringing. Like Ezekiel, they tried to grasp it.
“The exuberance and joy they experienced was out of this world. I tried to ask them but no one bothered to answer. They were all caught in the miracle,” Pastor Chong said.
Seeing his students’ behaviour convinced him. “I told the Lord, ‘I believe, I believe that they are hearing you.’
“The moment I said it, I kena already! I heard the Hallelujah choruses; I felt the strong sensation flowing down from my ears to my heart. I fell down in instant worship, tears of joy started flowing like a river.
“I opened my eyes to glance at my students just in case I was the only one weeping, but they were still there praising and praising God. We were overwhelmed and lost the sense of time.
“The sky was huge and dark blue; the stars were bright if we were looking at them through a telescope. Everything seemed far away.
“I saw everything captured like through a fish eye. I saw the trees in Templer’s Park, they were at the far corner of my ‘eye’ as though they were small and irrelevant. The sky was huge and very dark blue,”
“Coming out of the dark blue skies and the crystal clear stars were choruses of ‘Hallelujah’ zooming through the universe from one end to the other,” Pastor Chong said, admitting that it was simply beyond words.
“But it was not Beethovan’s concerto. ‘Hallelujah choruses’ sounded like being broadcasted from one end of the universe to the other,” he added.
He described the choruses were very different from those we used to hear. They sounded like in 12 to 14 octaves from another dimension, beyond any natural human capacity to produce.
Angelic Encounter at the River
“We lost the sense of time. Suddenly we also heard a melody like a la-la-bye near the waterfall. But this time, we had kautou (surrendered) already. We heard a psalmist playing music at the brook. It was like an angel relaxing there. We tried to follow singing the melody but couldn’t.”
“Our tongue cannot follow the kind of melody. We couldn’t help but bowed endlessly and worship until after 4.00 in the morning. Our foreheads and knees were red and bruised but we didn’t feel anything because the experience was overwhelming. It was revival!
“When we finally went back to sleep, we heard footsteps like those of the armies in the LORD of THE RING movie, very heavy ‘boom’, ‘boom’, ‘boom’. The impression that I got was that of God’s army marching on, advancing and nothing could stop it.
Pastor Chong interpreted it as “My (God) Kingdom is coming and nothing could stop it,” he said of the whole experience.
Back to Earth
He said when they returned to the college after the camp at about 12 noon on Sunday, some students were doing some work at the college.
As soon as the five of them walked into the classroom, one demon possessed girl was flung across the room and hid under the table. The others who were also demon possessed also fled.
Another guy shouted, “Mr Chong, Mr Chong don’t come any closer or I will call the Police!” cried a non-Christian, threatening to call the police though Pastor Chong didn’t do anything to threaten him.
“When the glory of God fills you, it is like that. It’s like Moses, full of God’s glory,” he said.
What was happening?
“I asked the five students to ask God why all these happened,” Pastor Chong said.
They came back to the college at 7 pm after refreshing themselves, trying to grapple with what had gone on.
All the five of us returned with the same verse which the Lord showed:
19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven. (Luke 10:19-20)
“We were over joy!”
At that juncture, Pastor Chong had still not attended church yet. He said, “One of the camper’s sister saw his own brother like gone mad, she worked at Selangor Pewter and happened to know a colleague who was attending a prominent church in Setapak. They took all of us to see the Senior Pastor then.
“Senior Pastor verified and concluded that we were far from being crazy; we experienced the authentic open heaven experience from God,” he said
After that heavenly experience, Pastor Chong’s wounds and doubts were all healed and cleared. He started to attend Emmanuel EFC in Wangsa Maju shortly after before moving to Hope EFC to become a pastor with the Chinese congregation.
“It is never too late to know and accept Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour but do it quick so that your name will be written in the Book of the Lamb and you will enjoy eternity with God,” Pastor Chong exhorted.
