The word ‘love’ has come to mean a lot of things. Some people refer to a feeling, a theory, or a nice word when they say ‘love’. Other phrases such as ‘fall in love’ depicts love as something that ‘just happens’. Love however, is so much more – it is an action. Real love involves the way we treat others and the things we do to positively affect people’s lives.

Many people are looking for love and searching for something that is real. As Christians, we need to represent Jesus and display His love everywhere we go. Jesus was asked, what the most important commandment was; His answer is in Matthew 22:37-39 which says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Often times, we think we need someone to love us – many people search for love, and many are disappointed. However, what we really need to do is firstly, love God, and secondly, love the people around us. As we begin to place our focus on other people, a shift happens. True fulfillment happens when we start giving our lives away – when we start giving love to the people around us. As Christians, we have been called to help people who are hurting, and we may be the only people who will show them what love truly means.

1 Corinthians 16:14 says, “Let all that you do be done in love.” And 1 John 4:7-8 says, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” We need to make love a priority, consciously making it a goal to pursue God’s love and then to give it away. One of the things with love is that we need to receive His love before we can share it with those who are around us. And when we ourselves are filled with God’s love, we will naturally become a blessing to those who are around us.

It was because of God’s love for us that He sent His son to die for us (John 3:16). Many look for fulfilment in material things, but it is only when God’s love and grace is experienced that change and fulfilment can happen. Many are looking for answers and searching for something that will give them meaning. And the answer to their question is Love – God’s love, demonstrated by those who know and have experienced God’s love; demonstrated by us.
