JESUS CHRIST, JESUS CHRIST,
WHO ARE YOU, WHAT HAVE YOU SACRIFICED?
JESUS CHRIST, SUPERSTAR!
DO YOU THINK YOU’RE
WHAT THEY SAY YOU ARE?
(Songwriter: AL Webber)
Many of us still remember the era of the Rock and Roll days of the 60s and 70s. Songwriter Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote this popular song “Jesus Christ, Superstar”. This particular song became quite famous and actually made it to the top of the charts. The message from this song is spelt quite clearly – “Jesus Christ who are you?!” However, the answer given in the song was quite vague and confusing.
Even after many decades afterwards, many of us are still asking the same question! Yet we all do not seem to have the answers although we have been asking for such a long time! This has been a representation of our agnostic world’s understanding of Jesus our Lord and Savior. Is this, however, not a true expression of the stark knowledge of plain ignorance of those who have read and heard of Jesus so often but yet have never accepted Him and experienced Him as their personal God? By the words of the song “Jesus Christ Superstar”, doesn’t the songwriter reveal that he has not got a clue about the importance of Jesus? He has just written about Jesus like he would with all those men who we read in history books. Does Jesus only intrigue us just like one these famous historical characters and nothing more? Otherwise, why are we still asking who Jesus is? Why cannot we possibly understand the true meaning of His sufferings, crucifixion and death?
Apostle John wrote in his gospel that Jesus is the Son of God who came in human flesh, sacrificed His life on the cross for the redemption of humanity and then returned to the Father – all with a view that we may accept and follow Him as the true Son of God. In his short life on earth, He was able to demonstrate, by His example, how we should all live as human beings. Jesus taught us the two greatest commandments in Matthew 22: 37- 39
(1) “To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and
(2) “To love your neighbor like yourself ”
By His resurrection after He was crucified dead and buried, He has proven that He has been victorious over the devil. His resurrection has also proven that we too do not need to be afraid of the finality of death on earth. Jesus’ coming back to be with His disciples for the second time has shown beyond the shadow of doubt that there is a continuation of our lives beyond death. Those of us who have accepted His salvation believe that death is not a loss or the end but indeed the beginning of life in eternity with our heavenly God!
