Recently, just last Monday, Christian music-lovers in this nation had a blast with one of the highlights of the year. This event was the 2014 visit of Israel Houghton to Malaysia.
Israel Houghton is no stranger to most people in the world. Among the awards he has won are included some really prestigious ones like 4 Grammys and 2 Stellar Awards, and an incredible number of Dove Awards for a consecutive period over 5 years.
Nearly 2400 people attended the concert at Grace Convention Center on the 6th of October 2014. Through 2 hours, concert attendees had an amazing time of worship complete with strobe lights and virtuoso performance by Houghton and his band. In total, Houghton’s entourage, including a special guest, consisted of 29 members.
Houghton has a unique style that blends such different genres of music as gospel, jazz, and rock into one incredible fusion. The concert was also graced by Sidney Mohede of JPCC fame, and there were many musical interactions between the musical partners. Houghton is as much a lover of music as he is a worship leader, and midway through the concert, there was a grand extended session full of virtuosic keyboard and guitar riffs.
Many songs were performed that night including Mighty to Save, Te Amo, Your Presence is Heaven to Me, One Thing Remain, and his latest single, Covered. Houghton shared about his inspiration behind this latest single, and his amazement at the great power of God’s Grace that covers all struggles and shame in our life. One of the highlights of the night was the landmark song, ‘Jesus Be the Center of My Life’. By the end of the concert, the whole hall was shouting for encores.
A neat surprise sprung by Houghton towards the end of the concert involved crowd participation. Selfies taken and contributed (hashtag #AliveinAsia) that night will be included, along with the songs performed and clips, in Houghton’s next live album, ‘Alive in Asia’, scheduled to be released in 2015.
The concert by Israel Houghton is part of his Alive in Asia tour, with further stops in Japan at the Yamato Calvary Chapel, Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul, and the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Manila.
