In the Quiet… THE VOICE IN THE WORD (Part 2)

How do you hear God’s voice? Are you struggling to hear Him? God does not hide from you but He does want you to SEEK Him.

He can be found anytime, anywhere; one certain way is through His Word, where you can discover His character intimately. God is eager to reveal His love for you and

“He rewards those who earnestly seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

The Word of God is not simply a book of law or guidelines on how we should live. It is to be experienced, not merely read for knowledge and information. God’s Word reveals His nature and allows you to experience real intimacy with Him because through scripture, you understand His heart. It is a place where you discover why He created you, and most importantly, why He died for you.

You see the Word of God is where His story meets yours. It is where His Spirit and your soul engage, and where He comes alive and personal to you.

It is IN the Word of God where the Voice of God speaks.

When we abide in God’s Word with a teachable heart and an expectant spirit, we allow the Holy Spirit to give us profound revelations that can transform us. “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

It is through these revelations that we can grow in our communion with God, as we personally begin to understand, experience, and know Him in an intimate way. When we sink deep into God’s Word and promises, that intimacy grounds us in our identity and authority in Christ.

It shows us how to let our faith triumph over trials. It teaches us to swim in God’s love and never drown in doubt. It guides us to live each day victorious, with His peace overflowing into every situation, no matter how difficult.

Through the Word, we can learn how to exercise the faith we have been given so that it takes stronger root. How do we exercise our faith? Romans 10:17 tells us that, “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” This simply means that God’s Word produces faith.

In Luke 8:5-15, Jesus used the Parable of the Sower to tell us that God’s Word is the seed and unless it is planted on good soil, which is our heart, it cannot take root and produce good fruits.

In verse 14, Jesus explains that, “ The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.”

The word “choke” in verse 14 comes from the Greek Word sympnigō, which literaly means, ‘to drown.’ When our hearts are divided and concerned with the cares of our circumstance, it cannot nurture the seed of God’s Word to take root. Our faith will drown.

When Jesus told Peter “Come” in Matthew 14:9, He gave Peter a Word to encourage and stir up the faith within him. But Peter, who at first obeyed and stepped out in that swell of faith, suddenly took his eyes off Jesus. Instead, Peter saw the wind and waves around him. It overwhelmed him and then, Peter choked. He became frightened and he began to sink or drown.

How often have we imitated Peter in this scene? How often have we ignored God’s voice in His Word that tells us:

  • fear not, I am with you’ (Isaiah 41:10)
  • don’t worry or be anxious’ (Matthew 5:25-26; Philippians 4:6-7)
  • I will provide’ (Philippians 4:19)
  • I will sustain you’ (Isaiah 46:4)
  • I love you’ (1 John 3:16; 4:19)
  • You are mine’ (Isaiah 43:1)

How often have we allowed the waves and storms of our situation to choke God’s word and promises?

When Jesus reached out His hand to catch the sinking Peter, (v31) He asked, “why did you doubt?” God still asks us this question today – each time we let our situation silence His voice and Word.

Why do we doubt His Word?

Every time we choose to allow that, we allow the gap between God and us to widen, and we risk sinking just like Peter. When we doubt, we drown out God’s voice and our intimacy with Him is shaken. Remember that it is our choice.

We can either allow the Voice in The Word to take root in our hearts OR we can choose other voices in the world to choke our faith.

Are you struggling to hear God’s voice? God is always speaking, especially through the pages of His Word – hearing His voice is your choice.
