Psalm 87 – Jerusalem – The Beautiful City of God
(by Andrew Lim)
This Psalm expresses God’s love and delight for the City of Jerusalem. Why is this so?
It is God who laid the foundation of this Holy City. Believers are also built on the foundation of God where Christ is our Chief Cornerstone. In 1 Peter 2:4, we are told God is Holy and thus we too are to be holy as the apostle Peter reminds and exhorts us.
This City is loved by God more than any other places in Israel. This City brings glorious testimonies – past, present, and future. The Bible made many references to the City of Jerusalem. It was here that King and Priest Melchizedek reigned and served. King David also reigned and made Jerusalem his capital. It was here that King Solomon built the Holy Temple. We are reminded that Abraham offered his son Isaac on this Holy hill as a sacrifice. It was also on this calvary hill that God offered His only beloved Son, Jesus Christ, as a sin offering for the whole world and that He died, buried, and rose from the dead.
What’s more, the early church was born here at Pentecost. It will be here that God will establish the physical, geographical centre of His ultimate Kingdom on earth. This City is open to anyone who is willing to become its citizen. What a glorious prospect we all have!
May this Psalm refresh us. As we receive, let us also freely give that others may benefit from Jesus, the source of Living Water.
Let’s Read Psalm 87
Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm. A song.
1 He has founded his city on the holy mountain.
2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the other dwellings of Jacob.
3 Glorious things are said of you,
city of God:
4 “I will record Rahab and Babylon
among those who acknowledge me—
Philistia too, and Tyre, along with Cush—
and will say, ‘This one was born in Zion.’”
5 Indeed, of Zion it will be said,
“This one and that one were born in her,
and the Most High himself will establish her.”
6 The Lord will write in the register of the peoples:
“This one was born in Zion.”
7 As they make music they will sing,
“All my fountains are in you.”
Let’s Pray
Lord, may our life be like the City of God. Always Holy, build on the foundation of Christ, loving God, always recognizing the good of others better than ourselves, always ready to serve God and men. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
