Heavenly Devotion: Psalm 72 – The Greatness of King Jesus

Psalm 72 – The Greatness of King Jesus

(by Goh Sook Wah)

In this Psalm, Solomon prayed for himself as the reigning king of Israel to rule with wise judgment and God’s righteousness. God blessed the nation of Israel under his rule and there was peace and prosperity among his people. Solomon began to lift his vision beyond his own reign toward the reign of a greater Son of David, the Messiah to come. He will establish His Kingdom and reign on earth to judge sin and establish righteousness.

This King would have dominion far greater than Solomon, which extends to the ends of the earth. He will have dominion over all His enemies, have great compassion for the poor and needy, and will rescue the victims from oppression and violence.

All kings will bow down to Him and serve Him. He will live forever. He will bestow great blessings and abundant prosperity to His people. His name will endure forever and all nations will be blessed through Him.

The Psalm ends with a great doxology of praise to the great King Jesus who does wondrous things and whose glory fills the whole earth.

This Psalm teaches us to pray for our leaders that they will govern justly and righteously. It encourages us to renew our hope in Christ as our great King. He reigns in our lives today and will come again to establish His millennial Kingdom when His reign will be fully manifested here on earth.

Maranatha, come King Jesus!

Let’s Read Psalm 72

Of Solomon.

Endow the king with your justice, O God,
    the royal son with your righteousness.
May he judge your people in righteousness,
    your afflicted ones with justice.

May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
    the hills the fruit of righteousness.
May he defend the afflicted among the people
    and save the children of the needy;
    may he crush the oppressor.
May he endure as long as the sun,
    as long as the moon, through all generations.
May he be like rain falling on a mown field,
    like showers watering the earth.
In his days may the righteous flourish
    and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

May he rule from sea to sea
    and from the River to the ends of the earth.
May the desert tribes bow before him
    and his enemies lick the dust.
10 May the kings of Tarshish and of distant shores
    bring tribute to him.
May the kings of Sheba and Seba
    present him gifts.
11 May all kings bow down to him
    and all nations serve him.

12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
    the afflicted who have no one to help.
13 He will take pity on the weak and the needy
    and save the needy from death.
14 He will rescue them from oppression and violence,
    for precious is their blood in his sight.

15 Long may he live!
    May gold from Sheba be given him.
May people ever pray for him
    and bless him all day long.
16 May grain abound throughout the land;
    on the tops of the hills may it sway.
May the crops flourish like Lebanon
    and thrive like the grass of the field.
17 May his name endure forever;
    may it continue as long as the sun.

Then all nations will be blessed through him,
    and they will call him blessed.

18 Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,
    who alone does marvelous deeds.
19 Praise be to his glorious name forever;
    may the whole earth be filled with his glory.
Amen and Amen.

20 This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.

Let’s Pray

Our Lord God, we bow down before you and acknowledge you as our King of Kings and Lord of Lords. You reign among your people and we look forward to the day when your reign will be fully manifested in all the earth, where you will have complete dominion and there will be great blessings, abundant peace, and prosperity as the whole earth is filled with your glory. We exalt your Name on high. Come quickly, Lord Jesus and pour out your grace upon us. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
