Psalm 65 – God of Abundance

(Written by Li Sze Chow)

This is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise to God for His abundance of blessing and goodness in our lives. The psalmist David describes a divine atmosphere where praises are waiting to be given unto our God in Zion, as people gather together to thank God for answering their prayers with an abundance of harvest and forgiveness of their sins and transgressions.

Verses 5-8 describe the far-reaching greatness of God our Saviour who answers us with awesome and righteous deeds. No matter how desperate your situation, how painful your turmoil, how hopeless your circumstances, how heart-breaking your losses,… “the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas” (v.5b) lies in the Almighty God who neither forsakes us nor fails us. Because He is the God of this universe who forms the mountains and seas, who stills the roaring seas and their waves. Day after day, we will call forth the songs of joy when the “whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders” (v.8).

Verses 9-13 describe how much God cares for the land. It shows the extent of God’s care for His people to ensure that they are richly blessed with an abundance of harvest from their grains and crops. When we feel lacking financially and insufficient, when the economy is bad with high inflation, when there are many insecurities and uncertainties in life, we shall proclaim “The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it.” (v.9b) and declare that “You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance.” (v.11). God is the only security and provider for our lives who bring us overflowing of blessing and gladness. We shall shout for joy and sing for the Lord!

Let’s Read Psalm 65

For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.

Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion;
    to you our vows will be fulfilled.
You who answer prayer,
    to you all people will come.
When we were overwhelmed by sins,
    you forgave our transgressions.
Blessed are those you choose
    and bring near to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,
    of your holy temple.

You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,
    God our Savior,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
    and of the farthest seas,
who formed the mountains by your power,
    having armed yourself with strength,
who stilled the roaring of the seas,
    the roaring of their waves,
    and the turmoil of the nations.
The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
    where morning dawns, where evening fades,
    you call forth songs of joy.

You care for the land and water it;
    you enrich it abundantly.
The streams of God are filled with water
    to provide the people with grain,
    for so you have ordained it.
10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges;
    you soften it with showers and bless its crops.
11 You crown the year with your bounty,
    and your carts overflow with abundance.
12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;
    the hills are clothed with gladness.
13 The meadows are covered with flocks
    and the valleys are mantled with grain;
    they shout for joy and sing.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, we praise you and give thanks to you for the promise and assurance of your abundance of blessing in our lives. Help us to look unto you and continue to trust you no matter what we see in our current circumstances. In the storms of life, you calm the seas, you give us peace of serenity and love in your everlasting arms. You will enrich us abundantly and clothe us with gladness, in Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
