Heavenly Devotion: Psalm 62 – Finding My Rest in an All-Sufficient God

Psalm 62 –  Finding My Rest In the All-sufficient God

(Written by Dexter Ng)

In times of troubles, I will rely on God. I will be patient, uncomplaining nor feeling demoralized for He is my rescuer and my defense. He is my solid rock under my feet. Therefore, I will find my rest in Him, and that, He is able to provide. (verses 1-2)

But I have little faith in man. They bring ruin to my life. They lie and use hyprocritical speech to force me down from my high position. They are friendly to my face but while cursing in their hearts. (verses 3-4)

In the Lord, I will not be moved. I will stand silently before Him and wait as long as He says. My protection and success come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. He is God – the Enough. There is no situation in which I will ever find myself where God will not be enough. (verses 5-7)

Godly people, trust God absolutely. God is a safe-place to be, but man regardless of their social status and station in life, are inadequate objects of trust. Their riches and power are the results of deception and theft but even when riches are gained legitimately, don’t make too much of it. (verses 8-10)

I am reminded of two divine promises that I have heard – that God is strong and that He is loving. Therefore, He is able to deliver me with His act of love. God will richly reward the godly who trust Him but not man’s deceptive power. Therefore, I am confident that God will give me rest. And He rewards each one of us in according to what our works and actions deserve.

Let’s Read Psalm 62

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

Truly my soul finds rest in God;
    my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

How long will you assault me?
    Would all of you throw me down—
    this leaning wall, this tottering fence?
Surely they intend to topple me
    from my lofty place;
    they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
    but in their hearts they curse.

Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
    my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
    he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people;
    pour out your hearts to him,
    for God is our refuge.

Surely the lowborn are but a breath,
    the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance, they are nothing;
    together they are only a breath.
10 Do not trust in extortion
    or put vain hope in stolen goods;
though your riches increase,
    do not set your heart on them.

11 One thing God has spoken,
    two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,
12     and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”;
and, “You reward everyone
    according to what they have done.”

Let’s Pray

God, our Father in heaven, with all my heart, I affirm You are my sufficiency. You are enough. Forgive me that I so often turn to man. Help me to remember that I belong to You, the all-sufficient God. Save me from thinking that in times of troubles, man or anything can be a substitute for You. Please give me the understanding and convictions I need to trust You even when I cannot trace You. In Jesus’ Name, I ask it. Amen.
