Psalm 56 – Trust in God and Do Not Fear Man

(Written by Yoong Yuen Soo)

King David composed Psalm 56 as a thanksgiving song to God who saved his life from his enemies. In the Psalm, as a fugitive, he likens himself as a helpless dove fleeing from its prey.

Be gracious to me, O God! When I am oppressed by others, taken advantage of and slandered, I can put my trust in You. I shall not be afraid for You are my Avenger. You are angry with my enemies when they plan evil against me, stir up trouble and find fault with me.

You know me intimately. You remember my sorrows and my pains. When I call upon You, my enemies will be turned away. I praise You for Your words of comfort. I will not be shaken by any adverse situation.

I will give thanks to You always as You have saved my soul from eternal death. Whenever I stumble, O God, You lift me up so that I can live for You, in the light of Your presence.

Let’s Read Psalm 56

For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David.

Be merciful to me, my God,
    for my enemies are in hot pursuit;
    all day long they press their attack.
My adversaries pursue me all day long;
    in their pride many are attacking me.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
    In God, whose word I praise—
in God I trust and am not afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me?

All day long they twist my words;
    all their schemes are for my ruin.
They conspire, they lurk,
    they watch my steps,
    hoping to take my life.
Because of their wickedness do not let them escape;
    in your anger, God, bring the nations down.

Record my misery;
    list my tears on your scroll—
    are they not in your record?
Then my enemies will turn back
    when I call for help.
    By this I will know that God is for me.

10 In God, whose word I praise,
    in the Lord, whose word I praise—
11 in God I trust and am not afraid.
    What can man do to me?

12 I am under vows to you, my God;
    I will present my thank offerings to you.
13 For you have delivered me from death
    and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
    in the light of life.

Let’s Pray,

Lord Jesus Christ, You knew me and loved me while I was Your enemy and when I did not believe in You. Thank You for saving my soul from eternal death. I will pray for my enemies and forgive them in Your Name. I will trust in the LORD God Almighty. I will abide in the sure Word of God. I will let Your Holy Spirit illumine Your Word and empower me to live for You. Amen.
