Psalm 48 – Praise and Joy in the City of our God
(Written by Daniel Wong)
We live in such difficult and uncertain times. The world seems to be moving from one crisis to another. The people of God in so many parts of the world are suffering for their faith. The voices of those who oppose God and his ways grow ever louder. It is in the midst of such darkness that the people of God find comfort and security in these words of the sons of Korah. These are words of praise and confidence towards a great God even when things seem to be only heading downhill. The city of God speaks of the people of God who live under his powerful rule and protection. The temple speaks of the loving presence of God.
We are reminded that God remains very much in control and he gives us victory against those who seek our destruction. Our righteous God will ultimately prevail. The death and resurrection of Christ guarantees this. Our God will always be our guide. His Spirit is in us to give us his peace and wisdom.
Let us respond with joy and worship as we continue to look to him. Let us bear witness to his compassion and power in our generation as well as to the next.
Let’s Read Psalm 48
A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah.
1 Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise,
in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
2 Beautiful in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon is Mount Zion,
the city of the Great King.
3 God is in her citadels;
he has shown himself to be her fortress.
4 When the kings joined forces,
when they advanced together,
5 they saw her and were astounded;
they fled in terror.
6 Trembling seized them there,
pain like that of a woman in labor.
7 You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish
shattered by an east wind.
8 As we have heard,
so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
in the city of our God:
God makes her secure forever.
9 Within your temple, O God,
we meditate on your unfailing love.
10 Like your name, O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11 Mount Zion rejoices,
the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.
12 Walk about Zion, go around her,
count her towers,
13 consider well her ramparts,
view her citadels,
that you may tell of them
to the next generation.
14 For this God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide even to the end.
Let’s Pray
Gracious God, our Heavenly Father, we join together with the psalmist to declare that you are the great God over all of creation. We praise you and bless you that you reign supreme and that your glorious kingdom will always prevail over the darkness of our world. We thank you that because of the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we can be a part of that beautiful city where is everlasting peace, joy and security.
Help us O Lord to meditate on your unfailing love and to keep trusting you. Thank you for the assurance that you will always be there as our guide, even as we seek to be your witnesses in our world. We pray this in the name of our precious Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
