Psalm 14 – I AM

(Written by Daniel Chew)

On 12th April 1961, Major Yuri Gagarin of the then Soviet Union was the first man who travelled to space and orbited the earth in the spacecraft ‘Vostok 1’. There are claims that Gagarin said, “I see no God up here.” However, it seems that it was the late Soviet President Khrushchev who said it in his anti-religious propaganda speech.

On Christmas Eve 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 read from Genesis chapter 1 as they orbited the Moon, beginning from verse 1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” until verse 10.What a contrast in expressing the beauty of God’s creation from out there in space between two nations involved in the space race!

Man distanced himself from God after the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Mankind then went on a downward spiral into evil, corruption, immorality, wickedness and deeds which broke God’s holy laws. Yet God sought to redeem mankind whom He had created and loves, and for mankind to have fellowship with Him by sending Jesus Christ to be the Saviour of the world.

In the Exodus account of the Burning Bush, Moses came to know of the God who was to deliver the Israelites from Egyptian slavery as “I AM WHO I AM.” And Moses was to declare to the Israelites that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is the “I AM” indeed. Just as the Israelites were glad and rejoiced for their deliverance, we of the New Covenant of grace offer praise and thanksgiving for our “so great a salvation.”

Let’s Read Psalm 14

For the director of music. The Psalm of David.

The fool says in his heart,
    “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
    there is no one who does good.

The Lord looks down from heaven
    on the sons of men
to see if there are any who understand,
    any who seek God.
All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt;
    there is no one who does good,
    not even one.

Will evildoers never learn –
those who devour my people as men eat bread
    and who do not call on the Lord?
There they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.
You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Let’s Pray:

Our heavenly Father, we thank you that You revealed Yourself and salvation to us through the incarnation of Your only begotten Son, even our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We can confidently declare that we are indeed children of the eternal God to whom we cry “Abba Father”.

Knowing and placing trust in You as the one true God is a significant part of our life. And we are assured to be in the presence of the “I AM” who walks with us and talks with us daily. Unto You be glory for ever and ever. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
