Psalm 119:1-8 – Know and Obey God’s Word Bring Blessings to Life
(by Elder Rodney Tan)
Psalms 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and it’s carefully constructed. Each stanza starts with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet. So, the first eight lines all start with the equivalent of the letter “A”. The next with the letter “B” and so on. This is a celebration of God’s word from A to Z.
Knowing and obeying God’s word will bring blessings to our life, some of which are given in this passage. This passage begins with the blessedness of a sincere person’s life in the Lord for they walk and keep the law “with all their heart” (verses 1, 2). Next these blessed people are described positively and negatively. Negatively because they practice no sin or wrong. Positively for they walk in God’s ways, i.e. they habitually act as the Lord requires in His Word (verse 3).
In Verses 4 and 5, the full weight of God’s authority is emphasized. It is the duty of a godly person to follow God’s law diligently. Verse six calls for the habitual obedience of all the commandments of God and not to disregard any. The lamp of truth must light all of our paths. Holiness however, cannot exist without a sound knowledge of Scripture (verse 7).
Let’s Read Psalm 119:1-8
1 Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD.
2 Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.
3 They do nothing wrong; they walk in his ways.
4 You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed.
5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees!
6 Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands.
7 I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws.
8 I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me.
