Psalm 110 – The Victorious Messiah
(by Stephen Lew)
Psalm 110 is a Messianic psalm attributed to King David. It begins in verse 1 with the LORD speaking to the psalmist’s Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” This emphasizes the exalted position of honour, power, and authority of the Messiah.
Verse 2 says, “The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying, ‘Rule in the midst of your enemies!'” The psalmist declares that the Messiah’s rule will extend beyond the borders of Israel. Jesus is not only our Savior, but He is also a powerful and victorious King. As we face challenges and struggles in our lives, we can take comfort in the fact that Jesus is in control and that He will overcome all His enemies.
Verse 4 proclaims that Jesus is a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. This means that Jesus is a permanent and unchanging source of salvation and that His priesthood is unique and superior to the old Levitical priesthood. Our salvation is secure in Jesus and we can trust Him to always be our advocate before God.
The psalm describes the Messiah’s rule as accompanied by divine power, to subdue the opposing forces, and his role in establishing justice and righteousness.
As we meditate on Psalm 110, may we be filled with awe and wonder at the greatness of our God and the amazing salvation that He has provided for us through Jesus Christ. As we follow Jesus, we are called to surrender our lives to Him and to serve Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Let’s Read Psalm 110
Of David. A psalm.
1 The Lord says to my lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”
2 The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying,
“Rule in the midst of your enemies!”
3 Your troops will be willing
on your day of battle.
Arrayed in holy splendor,
your young men will come to you
like dew from the morning’s womb.
4 The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead
and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.
7 He will drink from a brook along the way,
and so he will lift his head high.
Let’s Pray
Heavenly Father, we come before you with humble hearts, seeking your guidance and grace. In times of trial and uncertainty, we find refuge in your steadfast love. Grant us strength and courage, dear Lord, to walk the path you have set for us. As we journey through this earthly life, guide us with your divine wisdom and light. May we proclaim your name to the nations, revealing your glory and shining ever bright. In the name of Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer, we offer this prayer with grateful hearts. Amen.
