Psalm 70 – Lord, make haste!

The Psalmist David’s prayer was a cry of desperation for he says in verse 1, “O God, hasten to deliver me; O Lord, hasten to my help!”. When something is repeated twice, it is a sense of urgency, particularly in a helpless situation or a life-threatening condition.
David had undergone numerous trials and testing as a young man and king. He felt God had forgotten him and his pressing personal needs. In verse 2 we read of David’s foes who sought to humiliate and shame him as they delight in his hurt. They also said in verse 3 “Aha, aha”, an expression of malicious pleasure. David may have been experiencing a particular challenge at that time as he was afflicted and in need.
David turned to God and confessed two things. Firstly, he acknowledged that he is a “poor man”. That is always an effective plea to God. God cannot do much with a man who is “rich and increased in goods” and feels he has need of nothing. In other words, we come before the Lord in deep humility. Secondly, he is a “praying man” – “You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay”. The essence of prayer is dependence. Prayer is, by its very nature an expression of need and weakness, as well as longing and trust. In verse 4, David encourages us all who seek the Lord to rejoice and be glad in Him; And let those who love His salvation say continually, “Let God be magnified.”
Therefore, whatever circumstances we may be in, we can be assured God listens and hastens to help us as His children.

1 Hasten, O God, to save me;
O Lord , come quickly to help me.
2 May those who seek my life
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.
3 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
turn back because of their shame.
4 But may all who seek you rejoice
And be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation always say,
“Let God be exalted!”
5 Yet I am poor and needy;
come quickly to me, O God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord , do not delay.
Let’s Pray
Dear heavenly Father, we are ever thankful that when in times of need, we as thy children can seek and call you. We come humbly always, acknowledging that there is no one but thee that will hasten to listen to our prayers. With that, we are ever grateful. Thank you for your fatherly love for us. In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
