Psalm 36 – Victory through Love
(Written by Andrew Lim)
In Psalm 36, King David reminds us of 2 things. Firstly, the nature of sin. Secondly, the steadfast love of God. Please notice the word ‘speak’ in verse 1. This is sin personified.
Remember, after Cain murdered his brother Abel, God told Cain that sin is crouching at the door as recorded in Genesis 4:7. Sin is real like a person waiting to enter the door of your heart to destroy you.
King David also reminds us that sin is actively working in the secret depths of a wicked heart. He points out that sin has no fear of God but instead magnifies its own pride. Sin loves to hide its evil works hoping that it could not be revealed or found out by anyone. Where there is sin, there are always troubles and lies. An evil or wicked person can never do good or act wisely. In fact, he is constantly plotting evil works even when he is resting. He premeditates his evil schemes to do harm to those who do good works. Sin is indeed evil personified.
However, God’s steadfast love is the opposite. His steadfast love is precious to us. His steadfast love is as vast as the heavens above. His steadfast love provides refuge, rest, and safety to the weak. His steadfast love provides physical nourishment to mankind and animals. His steadfast love brings life and light to our souls.
No matter how much sin multiplies in this world, it can never outgrow God’s love and grace for us. Ultimately, all evildoers will be punished and cast into the lake of fire, never to rise again. We should rejoice and praise our Lord Jesus Christ who triumphantly conquered sin and death for us. So let us strive to live the victorious Christian life and thank God for His steadfast love for us.
Let’s Read Psalm 36
For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord.
1 I have a message from God in my heart
concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:
There is no fear of God
before their eyes.
2 In their own eyes they flatter themselves
too much to detect or hate their sin.
3 The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful;
they fail to act wisely or do good.
4 Even on their beds they plot evil;
they commit themselves to a sinful course
and do not reject what is wrong.
5 Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies.
6 Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
your justice like the great deep.
You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
10 Continue your love to those who know you,
your righteousness to the upright in heart.
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 See how the evildoers lie fallen—
thrown down, not able to rise!
Let’s Pray
Dear God, we can never live the victorious Christian life with our own strength and wisdom. Help us Lord to keep our eyes on you. Help us not to fear the new year ahead but instead let us trust your guidance. Help us to put on your armour when facing the evil battle and may we constantly listen to the Holy Spirit’s leading. Thank you Lord for your unfailing love and faithfulness to us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
