On 28th of June, Jill Southern-Jones – Executive and Regional Director of Southeast Asia for Ellel Ministries UK and Ireland – shared about soul ties in the Ellel 7-Day International Training School at Everly hotel, Putrajaya.
We are made out of body, soul and spirit
Like the Trinity concept of God (God the Father, Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit), we are also made of three parts: spirit, soul, and mind.
Our spirit is made out of conscience and intuition. When we believe in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit resides in our spirit as well.
Our soul is made out of our mind, emotions, and will (ability to decide).
Our body is made out of flesh, bone and blood. Our life lies in our blood (Leviticus 17:14).
The world cherishes the body most today, although it is the least important part. When we die, our body decays and ‘returns to the ground’ (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
But our spirit and soul are eternal. The spirit returns to God (Ecclesiastes 12:7). But the soul either goes to heaven or hell (Matthew 25:46).
We connect to God’s Spirit through our human spirit
Do you know that when we talk to God, it is our human spirit connecting with the Holy Spirit in us?
However, the Holy Spirit cannot fully influence us, unless we are fully reborn in the Spirit of God (John 3:5). ‘Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of Spirit’ (John 3:6).
So, let say: we need to go to a morning prayer meeting.
We go to sleep – our body sleeps, our soul sleeps, but the Holy Spirit in us ‘neither slumber nor sleep’ (Psalm 121:4).
When the alarm rings, the Holy Spirit wakes the soul up. In the soul, the mind says “I don’t think so”, the emotions say “I feel very tired”. And finally the will says “I don’t think I’m getting out of bed”. So, the body listens to the soul and continues sleeping.
Our body and soul make our carnal nature
Together, the body and soul makes what Paul calls as the ‘flesh’ or carnal nature (Galatians 5:24-25; Romans 7:18).
The carnal nature always opposes the Spirit of God (Romans 7:21-24). That is why Paul said, “For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing” (Romans 7:19).
Now, if Paul struggled with this, would we not also have a bit of trouble too? How good would it be if we crucify our carnal nature once and for all, when we accept Christ?
But the truth is: all of us must take up our cross daily and follow Jesus (Luke 9:23). Death of the flesh happens every day. That is what being a disciple is.
We need to be renewed in our mind (Ephesians 4:23, Romans 12:2), by reading and meditating on the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12; Psalm 119:11). And we are called to set our mind on what the Spirit desires (Romans 8:5).
We can be sick in our body, soul and/or spirit
We can be sick in any of these three parts.
We can be sick in our body.
We can be sick in our soul – mental sickness, emotional breakdown, and difficulty in making choices (our wil).
We can be sick in our spirit – being defiled (2 Corinthians 6:16; 7:1), crushed (Proverbs 15:13; Proverbs 17:22; Job 17:1) and broken (Job 17:1).
But the good news is that Jesus came to set us free (John 8:26)! He came to heal us in our body, soul and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24; Isaiah 53:5).
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)
Godly soul ties
Also, God created us to be relational beings. When we relate to others, we form soul ties with them. In the Bible, soul ties can be referred to as chains, yokes, bars and chords (Nahum 1:13, Psalm 2:3, Isaiah 10:27).
When we relate to people in godly ways, we receive blessings (Psalm 133). An example of a godly soul tie will be David and Jonathan – they made a covenant together and there God commanded His blessing (1 Samuel 18:1,3; Psalm 133:1-3).
Ungodly soul ties
Ungodly soul ties happen when we relate to others in a way against God’s ways. When we relate to others in ungodly ways, we give the enemy to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). ‘The cords of their sins hold them fast’ (Proverbs 5:22).
For example, while God meant sex to only happen in marriage between a man and a woman (Ephesians 5:31, Hebrews 13:4), an ungodly soul tie happens when a man have sex with a woman outside of marriage (1 Corinthians 6:16). So, even if they are physically separated after the sexual intercourse, they are still connected in ‘one flesh.’
It is interesting to note that a godly and ungodly soul tie can happen in the same relationship, between two people. For example, a father committing incest has an ungodly soul tie (sexual act) and godly soul tie (father-daughter relationship) with his daughter. Dealing with this matter will involve breaking the ungodly soul tie and affirming the godly soul tie.
Besides these, ungodly soul ties can also come in the form of domination, manipulation, abuse and control of others and by others. It can also happen in false worship, for God is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14).
God can break ungodly soul ties
The good news is: God has the power to loose, untie, break and tear off the bonds. ‘But the LORD is righteous; he cuts me free from the cords of the wicked’ (Psalm 129:4). Hallelujah!
There is power and authority in the name of Jesus to break all ungodly soul ties that the devil put us in. ‘At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth’ (Philippians 2:10).
How to break ungodly soul ties?
Firstly, Jesus Christ needs to be the LORD in our relationship. Remember that forgiveness is key – it is the gateway to all healing.
Secondly, confess and repent of our own sinfulness, which has led to the establishment of the ungodly soul ties.
Thirdly, ask God to cut all ungodly soul ties with a specific person.
Fourth, ask God to remove every ungodly influence of this specific person.
Fifth, ask God to draw back to you (and that specific person), anything that is wrongly tied to that person.
Lastly, take authority – in Jesus name – and cast the ungodly soul tie down.
Of course, the soul ties can be reestablished if the sinful relationship continues.
