font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">(Written by Daniel Chew)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Psalm 37 elaborates the third Beatitude in Matthew 5:5 \u201cBlessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth\u201d.\u00a0 The psalm communicates the wisdom of an old man who had walked with the Lord.\u00a0 He had battled with evil men and knew the frustration of seeing the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer.\u00a0 With the experience of the past, he now gives wise counsel to keep us from fretting, and to have faith in our God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world is full of evildoers, and they flourish and live in ease.\u00a0 We are bound to fret at this.\u00a0 We are, however, warned that outward prosperity will fade.\u00a0 There\u2019s no reason to envy the wicked.\u00a0 A man&#8217;s life consists not in abundance that he has.\u00a0 What is then the desire of the heart of a renewed, sanctified and righteous man?\u00a0 It is to trust in the LORD and do good.\u00a0 It\u2019s a reminder to walk by faith and not by sight.\u00a0 We are exhorted to delight in the LORD to find all our joy and pleasure in His will.\u00a0 We are to commit our way to the Lord for He will guide our steps, guard our integrity and bless our work.\u00a0 By prayer we can spread our case and cast all our cares before the Lord, and trust in Him.\u00a0 Then leave the matter with our Lord.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Let us also be still before the LORD.\u00a0 A restless spirit displays our unbelief.\u00a0 Martin Luther once said, \u201cBe silent to God and let Him mould thee.\u00a0 Keep still and He will mould thee to the right shape.\u201d\u00a0 God knows the believer&#8217;s days.\u00a0 God provides plentifully and well, not only for His working servants, but for His waiting servants too.\u00a0 They have that which is better than wealth \u2013 \u201cthe meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.\u201d\u00a0 Those who rest on the Rock of Ages have no reason to envy the wicked who like smoke will vanish away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Lord our God requires that we do justly and render to all their dues.\u00a0 By His providence, the LORD overrules events to make our way plain and leads us step by step, as children are led.\u00a0 He will guide our mouth to utter wisdom and speak justice, and the law of God will be in our heart.\u00a0 And God will neither abandon nor forsake us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Psalmist reminds us to \u201cwait on the Lord\u201d.\u00a0 To wait for the inheritance God has for us and reserved in Heaven just for us.\u00a0 The salvation of the righteous will be the Lord&#8217;s doing.\u00a0 He will help us to bear our troubles well, and get good by them, and, in due time, will deliver us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The psalm concludes with an assurance of our refuge in the Lord.\u00a0 Taking delight in the Lord, having His teaching in our hearts, casting our burdens on Him, being still before Him, and having Him know our days and ways is the way to find peace and to dwell in and inherit His land, enjoying the harvest of His faithfulness and providence.\u00a0 This indeed echoes the Beatitude \u201cBlessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Let&#8217;s Read Psalm 37<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>1 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not fret because of evil men<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">or be envious of those who do wrong;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for like the grass they will soon wither,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">like green plants they will soon die away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust in the Lord and do good;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delight yourself in the Lord<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">and he will give you the desires of your heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commit your way to the Lord ;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">trust in him and he will do this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">do not fret when men succeed in their ways,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">when they carry out their wicked schemes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">do not fret-it leads only to evil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For evil men will be cut off,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A little while, and the wicked will be no more;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">though you look for them, they will not be found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wicked plot against the righteous<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">and gnash their teeth at them;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but the Lord laughs at the wicked,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">for he knows their day is coming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">to bring down the poor and needy,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">to slay those whose ways are upright.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But their swords will pierce their own hearts,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">and their bows will be broken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better the little that the righteous have<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">than the wealth of many wicked;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the power of the wicked will be broken,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">but the Lord upholds the righteous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The days of the blameless are known to the Lord ,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">and their inheritance will endure forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In times of disaster they will not wither;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the wicked will perish:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Lord &#8216;s enemies will be like the beauty of the fields,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">they will vanish-vanish like smoke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wicked borrow and do not repay,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">but the righteous give generously;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">but those he curses will be cut off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Lord delights in a man&#8217;s way,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">he makes his steps firm;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">though he stumble, he will not fall,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">for the Lord upholds him with his hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was young and now I am old,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">or their children begging bread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are always generous and lend freely;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">their children will be blessed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turn from evil and do good;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">then you will dwell in the land forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Lord loves the just<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">and will not forsake his faithful ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">They will be protected forever,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the righteous will inherit the land<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">and dwell in it forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">and his tongue speaks what is just.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The law of his God is in his heart;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">his feet do not slip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wicked lie in wait for the righteous,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">seeking their very lives;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but the Lord will not leave them in their power<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">or let them be condemned when brought to trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait for the Lord and keep his way.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">He will exalt you to inherit the land;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have seen a wicked and ruthless man<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">flourishing like a green tree in its native soil,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but he soon passed away and was no more;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">though I looked for him, he could not be found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider the blameless, observe the upright;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">there is a future for the man of peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But all sinners will be destroyed;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">the future of the wicked will be cut off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord ;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">he is their stronghold in time of trouble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lord helps them and delivers them;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">because they take refuge in him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Let&#8217;s Pray<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Our loving Heavenly Father, how wonderful and how assuring it is that we can trust in You, that we can delight ourselves in You and commit our ways to You, and be still before You and rest in You and You alone.\u00a0 Though the wicked and evil people may seem to prosper and to enjoy life in that sense.\u00a0 They have all in a sense.\u00a0 Heavenly Father, we know that these things are just treasures on earth, that will rust, that thieves will break in and steal, that will vanish and fade away.\u00a0 But we know, Lord, that as we walk before you and as You delight in our ways and delight in us, as we keep Your law, as we utter wisdom and fight for justice and speak of justice, we know, Lord, that you would exalt us in due time and that we would inherit the land and all the inheritances that you have prepared for us.\u00a0 And that we would indeed claim it in eternity in heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And therefore, Father, we pray that none of us would look at the prosperity of others around us, at the good things and riches of the wicked and evil people, but be thankful for the daily blessings and the mercies which are new every morning lavished upon us.\u00a0 Help us therefore, to continue to keep faith with you, to walk by faith and not by sight, and to take our refuge in You and to rest in You, and to always depend only on You and You alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;
