{"id":60013,"date":"2017-11-04T10:32:10","date_gmt":"2017-11-04T02:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianitymalaysia.com\/wp\/?p=60013"},"modified":"2022-01-06T14:27:18","modified_gmt":"2022-01-06T06:27:18","slug":"coming-to-terms-with-the-grace-of-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianitymalaysia.com\/wp\/coming-to-terms-with-the-grace-of-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Coming to Terms with the Grace of God: Pr Angela Golingi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;God loves you just as you are and not as you should be.\u201d That\u2019s the gospel of grace in one sentence!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Manmade religion says you have to clean yourself up before you approach the Lord, but grace shouts, \u201cCome as you are!\u201d So how do we explain this passage which seems to say something different?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. (2 Cor 6:17-18)<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">This sounds like conditional acceptance, as though we have to purify ourselves before we can come to God. At least that\u2019s how DIY religion interprets it. \u201cYou have to separate yourself from the pollution of the world before God will accept you. You have to watch how you live or your Father may reject you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">What a horrible thing to say! Can you imagine saying that to your children? \u201cSin and you\u2019re out of the family!\u201d Yech!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Is Paul preaching conditional acceptance?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">If Paul is preaching conditional acceptance in <strong>2 Corinthians 6<\/strong>, then he is contradicting himself when he declares \u201caccept one another as Christ accepted you\u201d (<strong>Rom 15:7<\/strong>). The good news is not \u201cwork hard and you might get accepted. (That\u2019s not news and it\u2019s certainly not good.) The good news is that Christ has accepted you! God has made us accepted in the Beloved (<strong>Eph 1:6<\/strong>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60020\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60020\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.precept.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/blog_pic_Transforming-Grace-of-God.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60020\" src=\"http:\/\/christianitymalaysia.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog_pic_Transforming-Grace-of-God.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/christianitymalaysia.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog_pic_Transforming-Grace-of-God.jpg 880w, https:\/\/christianitymalaysia.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog_pic_Transforming-Grace-of-God-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/christianitymalaysia.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog_pic_Transforming-Grace-of-God-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/christianitymalaysia.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog_pic_Transforming-Grace-of-God-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ref: wordpress<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In the covenant of grace, God takes all the initiative:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>He loves us first (1 John 4:19)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>He forgives us first (Col 2:13)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>He accepts us first (Rom 15:7)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2026and all we can do is respond to what He has done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">You need to settle this in your heart. You are not a son or daughter because you avoid unclean things. You are a child of God because you have been adopted:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, \u201cAbba, Father.\u201d The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God\u2019s children. (Rom 8:15-16)<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">So what is Paul saying when he says \u201ctouch no unclean thing and you will be my sons and daughters\u201d? He is not saying we purify ourselves to become his children. Rather, <strong>we purify ourselves because we are his children<\/strong>. He is saying the same thing that John says here:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. (1 John 3:2-3)<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Do you see? The church has 40 members.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Some people read these scriptures on purification and conclude, \u00a0\u201cI have to separate myself and withdraw from the world and make myself holy.\u201d Yet Jesus never told his disciples to withdraw from the world. In fact, he sent them into the world while praying that God would \u201csanctify them in it\u201d (see <strong>John 17:15\u201318<\/strong>). Paul said something similar:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people\u2014not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. (1 Cor 5:9-10)<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Jesus didn\u2019t avoid sinners \u2013 He loved sinners. He ate with them and revealed God\u2019s grace to them. Same with Paul. He travelled to some of the most pagan places on earth and he brought the aroma of Christ with him. Same with us. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We are God\u2019s mobile home. Everywhere we go, there Jesus is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. (2 Cor 7:1)<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">This is a favorite scripture of holiness preachers because it\u2019s a new covenant exhortation that can be made to sound like an old covenant command. But it must not be read through a graceless lens as though you could somehow perfect yourself through dead works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Christ is our holiness and He is already perfect. How can you improve upon perfection? By His one offering He has perfected those that are sanctified (<strong>Heb 10:14<\/strong>). One with the Lord, you are just as holy and perfect as He is. This is not about withdrawing from society or locking yourself away in the hope of perfecting yourself. That\u2019s how cults form!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In this passage Paul is saying, \u201cDon\u2019t get distracted by worldly concerns. Don\u2019t follow or join yourself to those who reject Jesus. Don\u2019t tear yourself in half by saying yes to the Lord and yes to those who oppose him.
