\u201cGod is with us at home,\u201d called Ps Matthew Ling<\/strong> to the church, sharing his message on Faith at Home \u2013 Building Strong Families<\/strong> at the Trinity Methodist Church, Kuching here recently. He was one of the speakers for the 3rd<\/sup> International Women\u2019s Conference<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGod is in our marriage and also when we\u2019re raising our children,\u201d he continued. God\u2019s presence has always been with parents, he believed.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

1 Corinthians 7:14, <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cGod will use every one of us, impacting our lives,\u201d he said telling, \u201cGod is in our home as well as our church.\u201d He stressed on building the family altar unto God, just like in the Abrahamic Covenant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Genesis 12:1-3, <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0Lord\u00a0had said to Abram, \u201cGo from your country, your people and your father\u2019s household\u00a0to the land\u00a0I will show you.\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cI will make you into a great nation,\u00a0and I will bless you; <\/span>I will make your name great,\u00a0and you will be a blessing.\u00a0<\/sup>I will bless those who bless you,\u00a0and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth\u00a0will be blessed through you.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Genesis 18:18-19, <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAbraham will surely become a great and powerful nation,\u00a0and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.\u00a0<\/sup>For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0by doing what is right and just,\u00a0so that the\u00a0Lord\u00a0will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cGenerations were blessed through him,\u201d he said. The altar in the home is a place of communion where we focus on God and have communion with God. Faith is passed on; not just separate bodies but also to the home.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also explained about family devotions. There are several ways to build family altars, he said. \u201cThe home is a very powerful place,\u201d he added telling a family altar does not just happen. \u201cAltars have to be built,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n

To establish a family altar, certain things must be in place. \u201cAt least one person has to be a Christian,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deuteronomy 6:4-9, <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHear, O Israel: The\u00a0Lord\u00a0our God, the\u00a0Lord\u00a0is one.\u00a0<\/sup>Love\u00a0the\u00a0Lord\u00a0your God with all your heart\u00a0and with all your soul and with all your strength.\u00a0<\/sup>These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

God is speaking specially to the family and home.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ephesians 5:21-23, <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cSubmit to one another\u00a0out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands\u00a0as you do to the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church,\u00a0his body, of which he is the Savior.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is a household code. \u201cAltar building is not something to be sourced out but done by the family or parents,\u201d he said telling, \u201cIt cannot be delegated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Joshua 24:15, <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut if serving the\u00a0Lord\u00a0seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites,\u00a0in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household,\u00a0we will serve the\u00a0Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

The development of faith works from the head, heart and hands or knowing it, loving it, and building it. We need presence as well as relationship, and Sunday school cannot help with these.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Proverbs 22:6, <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cStart\u00a0children off on the way they should go,\u00a0and even when they are old they will not turn from it.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

Faith building moments can be through relationships, events or situation, and relevant trust. \u201cFamily devotions need to be nurtured beyond traditional fixed time; there are other times as well,\u201d he explained. There is teachable faith building moments. For example, the death of actor Robin Williams; \u201cWe can seize the moment to teach about truth or death,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Psalm 23:1, <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0Lord\u00a0is my shepherd,\u00a0I lack nothing.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

What kind of altar can we build with this piece of information? There are things you can create intentionally, other ways to have family devotion and have fun with as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBring the child to a place with God,\u201d he said. He also gave hope to those with children over the age of 18, telling his experience with his own son living in Melbourne, Australia. The pastor flew in over a weekend just to catch up and talk about God and his life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you intentionally build family altars there will be plenty of opportunities,\u201d he said. If we do not give priority, if a family member does not end up in heaven, then you have wasted your time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFamily altars are possible in the home environment,\u201d he said adding, \u201cSo faith can be passed on.\u201d As long as we are willing to do God\u2019s ways, God will use our willing heart no matter how little, God will move, he ended.<\/span><\/p>\n
