Heavenly Devotion: Psalm 75 – A Song of Thanksgiving to God

Psalm 75 – A Song of Thanksgiving to God

(by Stephen Lew)

Psalm 75 describes God as the ultimate judge. It is a psalm of thanksgiving to God in anticipation that God will deliver His people. The faith that God will deliver is based on an intimate knowledge of His character. He is a righteous, holy, and just God who is powerful, mighty, and is the only one we can trust to always do the right thing. He will judge the wicked at the appropriate time. As stated in verse 10, God “will cut off the horns of all the wicked, but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”

Who do we turn to and lean on in our time of need especially when we experienced betrayal and hurt? Who can we trust and rely on to rescue us when we are bowed down? Our response should be to run to the Lord who is able to calm our fears and provide us the assurance and hope we desperately need. When the going gets tough, we must rely on the promises and mercies of the Almighty God who is always in control over all things.

Thanksgiving to God should be a constant, spontaneous activity of His people. We have so much to be thankful for. We can praise God in good times and in troubled times, through successes and disappointments, because we know that He will set things right. The chorus of the song God is good all the time (Don Moen & Paul Overstreet) says:

God is good all the time

He put a song of praise in this heart of mine

God is good all the time

Through the darkest night, His light will shine

God is Good, God is good all the time.

Let’s Read Psalm 75

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph. A song.

We praise you, God,
    we praise you, for your Name is near;
    people tell of your wonderful deeds.

You say, “I choose the appointed time;
    it is I who judge with equity.
When the earth and all its people quake,
    it is I who hold its pillars firm.
To the arrogant I say, ‘Boast no more,’
    and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.
Do not lift your horns against heaven;
    do not speak so defiantly.’”

No one from the east or the west
    or from the desert can exalt themselves.
It is God who judges:
    He brings one down, he exalts another.
In the hand of the Lord is a cup
    full of foaming wine mixed with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
    drink it down to its very dregs.

As for me, I will declare this forever;
    I will sing praise to the God of Jacob,
10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
    but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”

Let’s Pray

Lord Jesus Christ, You have made known Your Name to all. You are the great Creator who is now my Saviour. You received the insults that Your creatures heaped upon You. You bore all the scoffing of the fools and the clamour of Your enemies. Yet You loved them all and died for them.

LORD, work salvation among Your enemies, for You do not desire that any should perish but have eternal life. I will wait patiently and praise Your Name as long as I live! For You will remember Your redeemed and carry out Your justice for Your Name’s sake. In Your precious Name, I pray.
