Psalm 4 – Fill my heart with joy

(Meditation written by Li Sze Chow)

Psalm chapter 4 is a Psalm of David who rejoices in God’s protection and peace. He is confident that the righteous God hears his prayer and answers when he calls on Him. Sometimes we wonder if God hears us. David assures us that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant, He cares for those who are faithful to Him. He will shine His face on us and fill our hearts with inner joy above worldly happiness; the joy that can overcome any troubles in life because God is with us.

Psalm 4

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

Answer me when I call to you,
    my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;
    have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

How long will you people turn my glory into shame?
    How long will you love delusions and seek false gods?
Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself;
    the Lord hears when I call to him.

Tremble and do not sin;
    when you are on your beds,
    search your hearts and be silent.
Offer the sacrifices of the righteous
    and trust in the Lord.

Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”
    Let the light of your face shine on us.
Fill my heart with joy
    when their grain and new wine abound.

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
    for you alone, Lord,
    make me dwell in safety.

Let’s pray;
Dear God, have mercy on me and hear my prayers. I trust in You, that You will answer according to Your divine plan and Your perfect timing. Search my heart to stay away from sins. I offer sacrifices of obedience and heartfelt praises to God. Let the light of Your face shine on me and fill my heart with inner joy. For You alone make me dwell in safety. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
