The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA): Bringing the Good News to Others through Sports

When it comes to sports, most think of matters of fun and leisure. But for the people from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), it is also an outreach to reach to the lost.

This is in line with their theme which is taken from Romans 10:14

And how are they to believe in one they have not heard of? And how are they to hear without someone preaching to them?”

First incorporated in 1954, as a dream that was placed by God into the heart of a young basketball coach in Oklahoma, the FCA would become an organization that provided a place for Christian athletes to grow in their faith. Called “God’s amazing, miraculous dream,” by Don McClanen, the young coach, the movement would transform the lives of countless coaches and athletes for the next six decades.

One of the main events that happened near the end of last year in 2017 was the visit to East Malaysia (Sarawak & Sabah) with back-to-back mission work. FCA hosted a FCA Borneo Sports Camp to reach out to the participants who were active sports members.

Among the members of FCA Malaysia present, was Chan Keat Swee, who represented the Alor Setar FCA.

God had impressed upon his heart to make Romans 10:14 the theme for the new year. It was to Work Together Building His Kingdom, through the sharing with and about sports Ministry to others.

“The Church + FCA are ONE. We have joined our spirits with the Spirit of God. We are ONE in the bond of LOVE,” Chan explained.

1 Corinthians 12:12

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.

“I thank God that I had learned so much from FCA Borneo Sports Camp and get closer to God by sharing His Word during daily devotion and Huddle time where we focused on ONE Passion, ONE Pain, ONE Power and ONE Purpose,Chan also testified that out of 36 campers, 2 gave their lives to Jesus and 3 reconciled with the Father in Heaven.

Jack Anak Bilun a participant gave thanks to God, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for willing to come here to bless them.

“We not only learn about the fundamentals of Soccer and Frisbee but we are also being taught God’s Word and how to share the Gospel to others. Through sports we can serve others and bring them to know our good Lord Jesus Christ. God be with FCA always,” he said.

Bro Chan also explained this was one of the many fruitful work that FCA has been doing. He explained that throughout the years FCA has been investing in the lives of Malaysian young people and with another 20 nations, a total representative of 350 young believers. Many are the leaders of today.

“It’s been an honor partnering with YWAM Go Fest (Missions Conference) on running Sports Outreach and sharing about FCA. By the grace of God, many were saved during the outreach program,” he added saying this itself was a very important ministry.

Psalm 27:4

I have asked one thing from the LORD; It is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the LORD and seeking (Him) in His temple.

Other fruits of the FCA ministry Chan explained were also shown where back home in Alor Setar, during the Trinity Baptist Church Healing Crusade, Vamsi a regular visitor to FCA and his mother felt the hope in Jesus and decided to give their life to Jesus Christ that night.

“Thank you so much to all who had been praying for Vamsi’s miraculous healing and his family’s salvation. Praise the good Lord. Hallelujah!” he said.

But none of this could have been done without the support of the churches that had always been part of the FCA AOR TEAM.

Chan hoped that this support would always continue even in the future.

“By the grace and mercy of our true living God, hope there will be more transformation in the life of the people we encounter with and His KINGDOM will be extended through it all. Let us serve The Lord, Hand in Hand, Heart To Heart.”

John 15 : 4-5

4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

As this is a ministry that is sustained by prayer, bro Chan expressed hopes that readers would keep FCA Alor Setar and him as a Sports Missionary in prayer.

“I also hope and pray many more Sport Missionaries emerge in Malaysia and East Asia for His glory” he said quoting Matthew 5:16:

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven,”
